Anti-Semitism Growing… In Israel?
500 Anti-Semitic incidents within Israel were recorded in 2002, prompting Rabbi Zalman Gilchensky to ask that current immigration policy be changed for countries of the former Soviet Union, whose immigrants blamed for the incidents.
The current “law of return” enables anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent to immigrate to Israel. Minister for Absorption of New Immigrants Yuli Edelstein calls the current policy “too zealous” in light of the new problems.
A recent poll shows that 70% of Russian immigrants to Israel are not Jewish according to religious law. The immigration bureau says it will not change its policy, saying it plans to address the issue with education programs instead.
