Blix not convinced by US claims
STOCKHOLM, 8 December 2002 — Chief UN arms inspector Hans Blix, who is to examine Iraq’s arms declaration in the coming days, said yesterday he had yet to see convincing evidence presented by the United States that Iraq possessed banned weapons.
“We are not claiming that (Iraq) still has weapons of mass destruction but the British and the Americans are. They feel that they have secret material that proves it but we have been given no such material,” Blix told Swedish Radio in an interview.
“We just have questions,” he added. “They have talked about aluminum pipes that can be used as centrifuges to enrich uranium. Others believe that they can be used for other purposes,” he said, adding that he hoped Baghdad had clarified such matters in its arms report. (AFP)
