In the beginning of October, the annual olive harvest began in the West Bank. This year’s harvest, which has been particularly plentiful, comes at a time of unprecedented socio-economic hardships among the Palestinians. The survival of tens of thousands of Palestinian families is more dependent than ever on their ability to harvest their olives and market the oil they yield. However, the olive harvest has been disrupted by violent and systematic attacks by groups of armed settlers.

Only in early November, four weeks into the olive harvest, did the Israeli security forces begin to take significant measures to prevent the settler violence. These efforts reduced the level of violence in some locations, however in other areas the attacks continued.

Deliberate attacks by settlers against Palestinians during the olive harvest is a phenomenon which recurs on an annual basis, though the frequency and severity of the attacks vary from year to year. In general, these attacks are committed by residents of a specific handful of settlements. In recent years, dozens of Palestinians have been shot and beaten while harvesting their olives. Since 1998, three Palestinians have been shot and killed in such attacks, all carried out by settlers from Itamar: Ahmad Suleiman Hatataba, 68, from Bet Furiq, in October 1998; Farid Nasasra, 29, also from Bet Furiq in October 2000; and Hani Bani Manya, 22, from ‘Aqqraba in October 2002. In the first case, the person responsible was convicted of murder, but in the other two, the perpetrators have not been apprehended or prosecuted.

Een typisch voorbeeld dat Israel wel degelijk een apartheidsstaat is. Israel heeft weliswaar regels om dit soort dingen te voorkomen, maar ze worden niet geimplementeerd. Het jaarlijks terugkerende fenomeen dat de Palestijnen het moeilijk gemaakt wordt om hun oogst binnen te halen lijkt inmiddels traditie geworden te zijn onder de kolonisten. Het is een effectieve techniek om het leven van Palestijnen ondragelijk te maken. Van deze oogsten hangen de inkomsten af die 10,000 Palestijnse buiken vullen. Zoals te lezen valt heeft het IDF actie ondernomen tegen het einde van het oogstseizoen maar zelfs toen ging het geweld nog gewoon door. Omdat dit soort praktijken jaarlijks terugkeren en al begonnen lang voordat de intifadah was begonnen had het IDF natuurlijk maatregelen kunnen en moeten nemen om het dit jaar te voorkomen, zoals een democratisch en sociaal land, dat Israel claimt te zijn, hoort te doen.

Hou aub op mensen met het sprookje dat Israel een democratische staat is. Israel is een op theology gestoelde staat. Welk democratisch land kent een minister van Godsdienst of een land dat een budget heeft voor een specifieke godsdienst. Dat heeft toch niets met democratie te maken. Iran heeft ook een door het volk gekozen volksvertegenwoordiging. Als Israel een democratie is, dan is Iran dat ook. En wie dat tegenspreekt is of eigenwijs of een ontzettende hypocriete leugenaar.
