Tehran, Dec 13 - Iran on Friday rejected US officials' claims that it had been secretly developing two facilities which could be used to make nuclear weapons.
"We have no nuclear activity or studies outside the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)," government spokesman Abdollah Ramezanzadeh said when asked a bout the claims.
CNN on Thursday cited unnamed US officials as claiming that American satellites had spotted two Iranian places, one in the central city of Arak and the other in Natanz in the Isfahan province, which suggested they could be used for making nuclear weapons.
The Islamic Republic has repeatedly announced that its nuclear activities are for civilian purposes and opened the facilities to regular supervision of the IAEA which has confirmed their peaceful intentions.

Iran zal inspecties van zijn nucleaire installaties door het IAEA, Internationaal Atoomenergie Agentschap, toestaan. Het agentschap is van plan in februari de centrales te inspecteren. Vannacht zeiden Amerikaanse functionarissen dat twee kerncentrales bij Natanz en Arak, die nog in aanbouw zijn, kunnen worden gebruikt om kernwapens te maken. De functionarissen baseren zich op satellietfoto's.
Iran ontkent een kernwapenprogramma te hebben en stelt dat de installaties voor civiele doeleinden zijn bedoeld. Teheran zegt verder dat de activiteiten niet geheim zijn en dat het IAEA erover is ingelicht. Het Weense agentschap zegt dat Teheran inspecties tot nog toe niet toestond.
Experts van het Instituut voor Wetenschap en Internationale Veiligheid (ISIS) in Washington zeggen na bestudering van de satellietfoto's dat de centrales wel degelijk gebruikt kunnen worden voor de productie van nucleaire wapens.
Rusland
Eerder werd al bekend dat Iran samen met Rusland aan de bouw van een kerncentrale in de Iraanse stad Bushehr aan de Perzische Golf werkt. De 800 miljoen dollar kostende fabriek moet vanaf september 2003 operatief zijn. De twee landen zouden ook al besprekingen voeren over een tweede reactor.
De Verenigde Staten hebben Rusland herhaaldelijk verzocht de nucleaire samenwerking met Iran te stoppen, maar Moskou heeft de oproep voortdurend genegeerd, omdat het IAEA over de samenwerking is ingelicht. Volgens de Amerikanen maakt 'schurkenstaat' Iran, naast Noord-Korea en Irak, deel uit van de zogeheten As van het Kwaad.

Abdollah Ramezanzadeh told IRNA here when asked about the claims.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi stressed that Iran's
nuclear energy activities were for "peaceful objectives" and denounced
US claims as being aimed at diverting the world public opinion from
the Zionist Israeli regime's threats.
"Such American propaganda against Iran is not new and is intended
to divert the world public opinion from the Zionist regime's threats
to the region at this sensitive juncture," he said Friday.
"Iran believes it has the right to carry out necessary researches
for peaceful use of nuclear energy and no country can deprive it from
this natural right," Asefi added.
The official reiterated that the Islamic Republic's nuclear
activities were "very transparent and under repeated supervision" of
the IAEA.
"Iran's steps in the field of using nuclear energy are in
accordance with international rules and conventions," he added.
The Islamic Republic has repeatedly announced that its nuclear

Washington has already been claiming that Iran may use its
under-construction plant in southern Bushehr, built with Russian
assistance, for developing nuclear arms.
Both Iran and Russia have rejected these allegations. Moscow
announced in August that it intended to build the second plant in
Bushehr.
The Islamic Republic has also reiterated its bid to complete the
plant, "given the 'enormous sum' which the country has already spent
on its construction."
"We don't pay attention to threats and are determined to finish
the works on the Bushehr station," said in August.
