Palestinian boy killed in Gaza Strip

15-year-old Asdudi shot by Israeli troops in head, chest, leg as clashes erupt in border town of Rafah.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip - A 15-year-old Palestinian boy was shot dead by Israeli forces on Wednesday as clashes erupted in the southern Gaza Strip border town of Rafah, Palestinian witnesses and medics said.

Ala Mohammed Asdudi was shot in the head, chest and leg as clashes erupted close to the border, where an Israeli army bulldozer broke down as it was flattening land close to Israeli positions.

The army started firing smoke bombs and warning shots after the vehicle broke down, but a crowd of young Palestinians soon gathered, throwing stones and a home-made hand grenade, witnesses said.

Asdudi was among the onlookers but was not involved in the stone-throwing witnesses said.

Rafah, near Gaza's Israeli-controlled border with Egypt, is the scene of frequent clashes and has become one of the deadliest flashpoints in the Palestinian territories.

Israeli tanks and bulldozers make frequent forays out of heavily-fortified positions on the border to hunt down gunmen shooting on watchtowers and to destroy weapons smuggling tunnels dug under the frontier.

The raids often include bulldozing Palestinian homes along the border area, many of which are empty after their occupants fled the daily clashes.

Asdudi's death brings to 2,775 the number of persons killed since the start of Palestinian unrest in September 2000. These include 2,046 Palestinians and 680 Israelis.
