BRUSSELS, Dec 19 (Reuters) - More Christmas Scrooges live in
Belgium than anywhere else in Europe, according to the results
of a poll published by a Belgian daily on Thursday.
Belgians planned to spend an average of 608 euros for the
festive season, about a third less than the European average of
901 euros, La Libre Belgique said, citing a poll by consulting
firm Deloitte & Touche.
The most generous Christmas spenders this year were the
Irish, shelling out an average of 1,395 euros per person on
gifts, food, drinks and entertainment.
On gifts alone, Belgians planned to spend 315 euros each,
130 euros less than the European average.
The amount is even less than the 340 euros to be spent by
their Dutch neighbours, whom Belgians have traditionally
considered to be stingier.
Six out of 10 Belgians plan to spend the same amount as last
year.
The poll of 1,050 people aged 18 or older was conducted
November 11-20. The results were published one day after
Belgium's consumer confidence index was shown to have fallen to
its lowest level in a year.
Krentenkakkers :haha:
