The Housing Ministry released a tender Monday morning for the building of 232 housing units in the West Bank city of Immanuel. The "Peace Now" movement said in response that at a time when one fourth of Israeli children live in poverty, Housing Minister Natan Sharansky and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon continue to channel money to the settlements.
The Yesha council of settlements stressed Monday morning that "as opposed to all the pessimistic forecasts" the Jewish settlement has grown over the past years, and currently stands at 220,000 people. The council added that over the past three years 40,000 people have joined the settler movement.
The Ministry of Tourism recently approved a plan to develop tourism projects in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip, at a cost of NIS 12.5 million, beginning in 2003. The projects were authorized after only NIS 7 million has been invested in the territories over the past four years.
Aharon Domb, Director General of the Tourism Ministry, said that the projects were approved, in principle, in accordance with a plan drawn up with the Treasury. "In 2003, NIS 5.5 million has been authorized for various projects, out of a total budget of NIS 101 million aimed at developing the tourism infrastructure. The rest of the projects will be carried out depending on the availability of the budget in the coming years," he said.
