Knowledgeable circles believe that the Jamali government, with the consent of President Musharraf, has initiated dialogue with leaders of major political parties to evolve consensus since Pakistan, like most of the regional Islamic countries, will side with the United States in case of a war against Iraq. It was also learnt that the government is likely to side with the US in a war against Iraq and wanted to discuss the issue in detail with regional Islamic countries. “Pakistan’s stand on Iraq will be the same as of other Islamic countries,” a senior government official said when contacted.
Jamali government is unlikely to support Saddam Hussein as Iraq has never backed Pakistan vis-à-vis India on Kashmir issue. Even Iraq has been supplying weapons to insurgencies in Pakistan, officials said. “We support the people of Iraq but cannot support Saddam Hussein,” the official said.
