Arab Summit: Public Saudi - Libyan confrontation; Discussions resume behind closed doors

The Arab summit, held in Egypt, went into crisis after Libyan leader, Moammar Gadhafi said during his speech that Saudi Arabia had formed "an alliance with the devil" when it asked US troops to protect it from Iraq during the 1991 Gulf War.
Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Abdullah interrupted angrily from across the room, questioning who put Gadhafi in power and telling him: "Don't talk or get involved in things which are not your business."
Shortly after that exchange, the live broadcast of the session was abruptly cut without explanation. The Saudi delegation left the summit, but later and after massive Arab efforts, it returned for the discussions behind closed doors.

'Alliance with devil'
The acrimonious exchange, which was broadcast live across the region, began when Colonel Gaddafi addressed the delegates.
He said Saudi Arabia's King Fahd had been ready to "strike an alliance with the devil" when American troops were deployed to protect the kingdom after Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990.
Crown Prince Abdullah interrupted, retorting: "Saudi Arabia is not an agent of colonialism".
"Who exactly brought you to power?" he asked the Libyan leader.
"You are a liar and your grave awaits you," he said, before Egyptian state television pulled the plug on the broadcast.
Delegates said Colonel Gadaffi refused to withdraw his charge and Crown Prince Abdullah stormed out of the room.
The conference was suspended for about half an hour while other participants calmed the two men down, news agencies reported.

Libyan riot police fired tear gas to prevent angry crowds from storming the Saudi embassy over a Saudi prince's harsh criticism of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, witnesses said on Sunday, according to Reuters.
Thousands of people marched through Tripoli before converging on the embassy late on Saturday, hours after Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah called Gaddafi "an agent of imperialism" during a heated exchange at an Arab summit in Egypt. The Saudi leader added that Israel brought Gaddafi to power.
Witnesses said the crowd chanted stinging slogans against Abdullah, de-facto ruler of the Saudi kingdom. As tensions rose, police broke up the protest with a tear-gas barrage that injured several demonstrators.
The row at the Arab League summit erupted after Gaddafi attacked Saudi Arabia for hosting American troops as Washington prepares to attack League-member Iraq. (Albawaba.com)
