Representatives of 19 Israeli peace and human rights organizations met today in Ramallah with the Palestinian Emergency Committee, in order to discuss the steps the Sharon Government may take in case the US attacks Iraq for furthering its policy of annexation.

Both sides expressed their apprehension that in this case, Sharon may order transfer of population from certain areas on the West Bank, especially those earmarked for annexation, to other areas. Such action may be spearheaded by local actions of armed settlers against the civilian Palestinian population. The Israeli organizations promised to do everything possible to prevent such acts. Practical steps were discussed.

Both sides also expressed their apprehension that with the outbreak of war the IDF will intensify the disastrous measures taken already in the past, such as prolonged closures and curfews that may lead to starvation, as well as assassinations and massive destruction of homes. Other possible steps are disruption of communications and cutting the electricity network.

In particular, possible steps of Sharon to eliminate or deport Yasser Arafat were discussed.

In the meeting, which lasted for several hours, the representatives of the following Israeli peace and human rights organizations took part: Alternative Information Center, Forum Smoll Haifa, Gush Shalom, Ha-Campus lo Shotek, Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, Indymedia, Ta’ayush, Windows, Women’s Coalition (Bat Shalom, Kvisa Shchora, MachsomWatch, New Profile), Yesh Gvul.

The Palestinian Emergency Committee includes the whole Palestinian political spectrum and the NGOs dealing with the principal services. It has subcommittees in all Palestinian towns and villages.
