The terror attacks on Sept. 11 and extreme turmoil in the Middle East point to one thing - World War III, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Friday during a visit to Tucson.
"We've been fighting a war for the past 18 months, which is the harbinger of World War III. The world is going to fight, whether they like it or not. I'm sure,'' Ra'anan Gissin, a senior adviser to Sharon, said in an interview Friday.
"Sept. 11 was a watershed event, and things will never be the same. The battle lines have been drawn.''
Gissin, 53, is in Tucson this weekend as part of a 12-day tour of the United States to promote the purchase of Israel Bonds. The bonds are part of a program that began in 1951 in which securities are sold to individuals and corporations to finance economic growth in Israel.
"The Israeli government pays them back. . . . The collateral is the eternity of the Jewish people,'' Gissin said, dismissing an April 1 Newsweek story that questioned the future of his country.
"We believe the state of Israel will continue to exist forever. Therefore, it's a sure investment."
On Friday night he spoke to an audience of about 300 people at the Reform Temple Emanu-El, 225 N. Country Club Road, as police stood on guard at the doorways of the synagogue. Today at 5 p.m. he is scheduled to speak at the conservative Congregation Anshei Israel, 5550 E. Fifth St.
Gissin called the war a clash between the civilized and uncivilized worlds.
"It's a clash between the forces of evil, as (President Bush) so neatly described it, and forces of life."

Het waren een heleboel moslim bronnen die als eerste aankondigden dat een aanval op Afghanistan - ja toen al - een wereldoorlog zouden doen ontvlammen. Wat nou als dat niet gebeurd? Misschien is dat een manier van Allah om duidelijk te maken dat de mensen daar in die regio verkeerd bezig zijn en helemaal niets hebben begrepen van zijn openbaring via de profeet Mohammed.

A senior Lebanese Shi'ite Muslim cleric called Friday for Iraqis to topple President Saddam Hussein, blaming him for their country's destruction, The Associated Press reports.
Grand Ayatollah Sheik Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, who strongly opposes the US-led war on Iraq, and is also known as a spiritual head of Hizbullah, also accused the United States of behaving like an "arrogant empire" by ignoring the anti-war protests worldwide.
Delivering the Friday prayers sermon to about 2,000 worshippers at a mosque in southern Beirut, Fadlallah said: "America is challenging the world with war and disdaining all the millions of people who oppose the war against Iraq.
It is threatening and rebuking the (UN) Security Council because it did not adopt its (US) second resolution, which authorizes its war."
"While confirming our rejection of Iraq's occupation by the arrogant (powers), particularly America, ... we call on the Iraqi people to topple the tyrant who has destroyed Iraq and thrown the Arab and Islamic region into disarray," he said.
Fadlallah called for support for an Iraqi revolt against Saddam.
"We call on the free (peoples) in the world to help them (Iraqis) in their future uprising, so that they can decide their own fate and future by themselves," he said.
Earlier this month, Fadlallah condemned Saddam, describing him as "the worst beast in human history, who killed his people, comrades, killed and fought Iran, occupied Kuwait and confounded his people and all our existence."
In Cairo on Friday, the Grand Sheik of Al-Azhar, Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, the leading cleric in the Sunni Muslim world, called for "jihad," or holy war, in support of the Iraqis, but he avoided any reference to the United States or the Iraqi regime.
"Jihad in Islam is meant to defend the religion, money, soul and freedom and to support those who were subject to injustice," Tantawi told Egyptians at the Friday prayers sermon.
"Islam supports defending the righteous path, and we have to support and defend the people of Iraq."
