Government has tasked the Attorney General to initiate action to place a temporary lien or freeze on the assets of Messrs Lushann Eternit, technical managers of Saltpond Oilfields, following the disappearance of the tanker (MT Asterias I) on Friday March 28, this year, as investigations continue.

The out-going Energy minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, who made the disclosure at a press conference, yesterday, added that he had furnished Interpol with the necessary information concerning the search. He, however, said that the exact location of the vessel was not yet known.

Plane disappears after take-off
From correspondents in Luanda, Angola
May 29, 2003

A BOEING 727 passenger jet, grounded at Luanda airport a year ago, has disappeared after a mysterious unauthorised take-off, Angola state radio reported today.

The plane, chartered by the Angolan airline Airangol, was grounded after being banned from overflying Angolan territory on account of a series of irregularities, said Angola civil aviation director Helder Preza.

A witness to the plane's departure on Sunday, airport employee Luis Lopes, said he saw a white man start the empty plane and then take off after a few dangerous land manoeuvres.

Airport chief Celso Rosa said there was some evidence to believe the Boeing had been fuelled up at Luanda airport, and said he would provide this information to the transportation ministry's investigation into the incident.

African hunt for stolen Boeing

The United States says it is working with African governments to try to find a stolen passenger jet that it fears may end up being used by terrorists.
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer admitted the US had few leads over who was behind the theft of the plane, from an airport in Angola last month, but was keen to gather any information available.

"We don't have any reliable assessments about what this portends, what it could be, who may be behind it. But it is an issue that is being worked on," he said.

His comments follow a report in the Washington Post newspaper on Wednesday that the Central Intelligence Agency and the State Department had joined a continent wide hunt for the aircraft.

The paper quoted American officials as saying that - in the worst case scenario - the plane could be used in an 11 September-style attack.

Feds Investigating Theft of Large Amount of Explosive Chemical

DENVER — Federal agents said Friday they are investigating the theft of 1,100 pounds of an explosive chemical from construction companies in Colorado and California in the past week.

Both thefts involve ammonium nitrate (search), a key ingredient in the bomb that destroyed the Oklahoma City federal building (search) in 1995.

In the first heist, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (search) issued a nationwide alert Monday after eight 50-pound bags of an ammonium nitrate-based explosive vanished from the Pike View Quarry near Colorado Springs.

Then 700 pounds of an ammonium nitrate product were stolen this week from a similar business in San Diego County, Calif., ATF agent Rich Marianos said Friday.

"We're trying to check to see if it's similar or if we can rule out if it's involved in our theft," Marianos said.

The California theft from Tom C. Dyke Drilling and Blasting in Alpine, about 30 miles east of San Diego, happened Sunday or Monday, San Diego County sheriff's officials said. Thieves forced their way into a locked trailer and took 16 50-pound bags. Two of the bags have been found.

Authorities have not named any suspects in the thefts. A half-dozen homes and businesses in the Colorado Springs area have been searched.

"There really hasn't been much concrete information to go on in this case," Colorado Springs police Lt. Skip Arms said. "There's equally the possibility it was somebody who had a legitimate blasting job and didn't want to pay for the chemicals to someone with bad intentions."

Ammonium nitrate is used as fertilizer, but can become a powerful explosive when mixed with fuel oil. The government estimated about 4,800 pounds of ammonium nitrate fertilizer was used to make the bomb that killed 168 people in Oklahoma City.

Authorities had said the material stolen in Colorado was already mixed with fuel oil and had a strong diesel fuel odor. They were not immediately able to say whether the ammonium nitrate that vanished in California was also part of a mixture.
