One person killed, 13 hurt, in suicide bomb attack in Kfar Sava
A security guard was killed and at least 13 people injured, three of them seriously, when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the train station in the city of Kfar Sava, around 7:20 A.M. on Thursday.
The bomber blew himself up at the entrance to the newly-unveiled train station in the city after the guard, who was hit by the full force of the blast, spotted him and demanded his ID card, said Sharon-area police chief Amihai Shai. Israel Radio reported that the guard's suspicion was aroused by the black coat the bomber was wearing despite the warm weather.
Police said the fact the bomber had not succeeded in entering the station had prevented greater casualties.
"There's no doubt that the guard at the entrance... prevented a much bigger disaster with a lot more injuries and a lot more damage," said police commissioner Shlomo Aharonishky.
The injured were evacuated to Meir Hospital in Kfar Sava and Beilinson Hospital in nearby Petah Tikva.
An initial investigation indicates that the 18-year-old bomber, Khaled Khatib, who was killed in the blast, was from the Balata refugee camp on the outskirts of Nablus.
Security forces have been on high alert over the Passover holiday, which ended Wednesday night. During this period, there have been many warnings of an attack in the Sharon region.
But police said they had no specific warning of an attack in Kfar Sava. Overall, security officials say they have 60 general warnings of planned attacks, most of them in the Jerusalem area.

"The Kfar Sava attack is another vivid example of the cruelty of Palestinian terrorism and its readiness to strike at innocent Israelis at any and every opportunity," said David Baker, an official in the Prime Minister's Office.
