Settler youths set up illegal outpost near Jericho

By Nadav Shragai, Haaretz Correspondent

A group of youths from the Mitzpeh Yeriho settlement in the West Bank on Thursday took over a nearby hill, overlooking Wadi Qelt, and announced it intended to stay there to prevent the site's invasion by Bedouin shepherds.

Police forces arrived at the site near Jericho and demanded in vain that the youths evacuate. One of the youths, Amihai Neiman, said the hill was 500 meters away from Mitzpeh Yeriho and was therefore within the settlement's limits. The police left at about 9 P.M., leaving the youths in the outpost, where they had put up two tents and a hut.

The youths called the new outpost Givat Haherut (Liberty Hill).

Some 100 people went Thursday to the settlers' outpost Beit Hogla, also in the Jericho area, calling on the authorities to permit Jews to enter Jericho. Speakers at the protest event included the rabbi of Kiryat Arba, Dov Lior, and former Kach member Baruch Marzel.

Lior lashed out at the road map for peace and Marzel called on the settlers' youth to capture more hills. The protesters then marched to Vered Yeriho, a settlement near the town of Jericho, and held a ceremony blowing shofars and trumpets in memory of the time when the children of Israel, lead by Joshua Bin-Nun, surrounded Jericho.

The event was organized by a group calling itself Matziv Gvul Almana ("Establish the Widow's Frontier") that consists, among others, of former Kach members. In the past two weeks, the group has initiated repeated efforts to recapture illegal outposts evacuated by the army, including Hill 26, near the Hebron enclave Kiryat Arba, and Ma'ahaz Giborim, between Hebron and Kiryat Arba.

The group's leading members include Marzel, Shaul Nir, the father-in-law of Nethanel Ozeri who was murdered on Hill 26 a few months ago, and Baruch Ben Yosef, a veteran Kach member.

Let wel Jericho is de enige stad in Palestina die redelijk rustig is gebleven gedurende de tweede intifadah. Gelukkig weten de Joodse terroristen wel raad met deze vervelende situatie.
