Kissinger: Morocco a Model of Political Success in Arab World
RABAT, Apr.24 - Former US secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, said Morocco stands out as “a model of political success” in the Arab world.
Unlike Algeria, which is living for ten years now in terror and violence, Morocco should be taken as a model of political success in the Arab world, the former US official, who served as secretary of state from 1973 to 1977 under presidents Richard Nixon and Gerad Ford, told Maroc-Hebdo weekly.
He also hailed efforts made by H.M. King Mohammed VI to consolidate democracy in Morocco, building on the democratization process launched by his father, the late H.M. King Hassan II. Echoes received in New York and Washington are very positive, he stressed, and the opposition’s access to government (in 1998) has consolidated the democratic process in the kingdom.
He expressed the opinion that Morocco is on the right path, despite social and economic challenges that the country is facing, praising the resoluteness adopted in addressing these difficult problems.
Of Moroccan-US relations, he said the USA is considering Morocco as a “friend” country with which Washington has always kept “excellent” relations. I would even say an old friend, because US-Morocco relations are very old.
The former US secretary of state said he personally knows and respects the late H.M. king Hassan II, calling the late sovereign a man who had a global, vanguard and enlightened vision on the Middle East.
Thanks to the late sovereign, Morocco was able to embark in a democratic process, he said, stressing that the world needs today men of the late king’s stature.
