All-out strike paralyses Israel

11:00:11 AM
Beit Ul-Moqaddas, April 30 - Some 700,000 public sector workers launched an all-out strike Wednesday, forcing the closure of Israel's main international airport as well as ports, trains, schools, the stock exchange and government ministries, the Histad rut trade union confederation said.

The strike was called in protest at a draconian austerity plan due to be submitted to parliament later Wednesday by right-wing Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu abrogating the collective agreements that have long governed the public sector in the Zioni st regions.

Only private businesses were untouched by the strike, with state-owned utilities and many banks also closed by the indefinite industrial action which began at 6 am (0300 GMT).

The costs of facing down the 31-month- old Palestinian uprising and the ravages of the global slump on Israel's key technology sector have sparked the worst recession in the 55-year history of the Jewish state.
