Peru strikes turn violent
Police have clashed with protesters in several areas of northern Peru following the imposition of a 30-day state of emergency by President Alejandro Toledo.
Teachers and other public sector workers have been leading the protests to press demands for pay increases, which the government says it cannot afford while implementing austerity policies agreed with the International Monetary Fund.
