Washington, June 7 - The United States intends deporting 13,000 Arabs who came forward to register with immigration authorities after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the New York Times reported Saturday.

This amounted to 16 per cent of all those Arabs who had heeded the authorities' appeal to come forward.

Only very few of the 13,000 Arabs had been categorised as "terror suspects", the report said.

Most of the Arab nationals were being deported for violating visa or residency permit laws.

Many had been surprised by the move as they had voluntarily heeded the authorities' call and expected leniency.

In the wake of the September 11 attacks, all adult Arabs who had entered the United States after a certain date were obliged to register with immigration authorities.
