Hamas welcomes Abbas talks
From correspondents in Gaza City
June 9, 2003
THE hardline Islamic movement Hamas welcomed Palestinian premier Mahmud Abbas' call today for a resumption of dialogue on halting the armed uprising against Israel, a spokesman for the group said.
"We welcome Abu Mazen's remarks on dialogue," Gaza spokesman Mahmud Zahar told AFP, using the prime minister's nom de guerre.
Abbas said earlier at a press conference: "We ... underline our determination to pursue the dialogue with the movements which criticised us on this issue. But we are forcing no-one" to take part in the ceasefire talks."

Hamas Still Opposed to Talks with Palestinian PM
Mon June 9, 2003 08:06 AM ET
GAZA (Reuters) - The militant Islamic group Hamas reiterated its opposition to cease-fire talks with Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas Monday, dealing a new blow to his hopes of persuading it to halt attacks against Israelis.
Abbas made a new appeal for dialogue Monday after Hamas pulled out of talks with Abbas Friday, accusing him of being too conciliatory to Israel at a peace summit last week in Jordan's Red Sea port of Aqaba.
Hamas leaders met in the Gaza Strip to discuss the appeal by Abbas, otherwise known as Abu Mazen. But Ismail Abu Shanab, a senior Hamas official, said: "He has not changed his attitude from Aqaba. Therefore the situation is unchanged regarding dialogue with Abu Mazen."
Another Hamas official, Abdel-Aziz Rantissi, said: "We stopped dialogue based on some developments and now there are new developments that need to be studied...Our position now remains as it was until we study them."

Vergeet niet dat de Mossad Hamas jarenlang actief heeft gesteund en wanneer ze daarmee opgehouden zijn, is ongewis.
