CAMP DOHA, Kuwait -- One V Corps soldier died and eight others were injured in an armored vehicle roll over accident 20 kilometers south of Al Asad Air Base, Iraq at approximately 8:00 a.m. today.

The personnel were traveling in an M113 Armored Personnel Carrier on a mission when they encountered a four-foot drop off on the side of the road that caused the vehicle to throw a track and roll over.

One soldier was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were flown by MEDEVAC to Al Asad Air Base for treatment.

One soldier was immediately returned to duty and the remaining five are expected to be returned to duty later today.

Names and units of the dead and injured are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

US military compound in Iraq attacked: sources
15.06.2003 [09:23]

Unidentified assailants launched a mortar attack on a US military headquarters in Ramadi, west of the capital Baghdad setting the building on fire, an Arab television station reported on Sunday.

The Qatar-based al-Jazeera television quoted one of its correspondents in Baghdad as saying that ambulances were seen heading towards the compound.

The compound had previously served as headquarters for the Iraqi Military Intelligence before president Saddam Hussein was ousted by US-led forces in April, al-Jazeera said.

Several US soldiers have been killed or wounded in the last two weeks in ambushes concentrated in two main areas - to the west of Baghdad around Ramadi and Falluja, and to the north around Balad, Baquba and Tikrit, Saddam's home town.

Washington blames diehard Saddam loyalists for the attacks.

15:08 Assailants fire grenades at U.S. military convoy, wounding at least four Americans, in Baghdad

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CIVILIAN BUS HIT DURING AMBUSH

TIKRIT, Iraq – An enemy individual fired a rocket-propelled grenade at 4th Infantry Division soldiers during an attempted ambush June 15, hitting a civilian bus that was passing a military convoy near the town of AL Mushahidah.

Units from Task Force Ironhorse returned fire to protect the convoy and the civilian bus.

Supporting units from Task Force Ironhorse responded to assist the people on the bus; however, the bus was moved while the soldiers were traveling to its location. The soldiers searched the ambush location but did not find the bus. The numbers of casualties on the civilian bus are unknown at this time.

In a separate incident, enemy forces staged another ambush with RPGs against a military convoy near AD Dujayl.

The convoy returned fire, and the attackers fled the area. A quick reactionary force was dispatched to provide security for the convoy and pursue the attackers.

Supporters of the former regime continue to put innocent civilians at risk. Coalition forces will continue to isolate and defeat remaining pockets of resistance that are delaying the transition to a peaceful and stable Iraq

We wachten af ...

U.S. Troops Scour Baghdad After Sniper Kills Soldier
Tue June 17, 2003 04:42 AM ET

By Andrew Marshall
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Scores of heavily armed U.S. troops swept through central Baghdad on Tuesday, sealing off roads and searching houses, after a soldier was killed overnight by sniper fire in the north of the lawless city.

A U.S. military spokesman said the soldier was killed on Monday night while on patrol. U.S. forces have been plagued by ambushes in Baghdad and the restive regions nearby. At least 41 soldiers have been killed by hostile action since May 1.(en daarnaast nog een heleboel ongelukken).
In a separate incident on Monday, a car exploded in western Baghdad, and residents said a woman and young girl had been killed. They said the blast happened at an intersection where U.S. troops were manning a checkpoint earlier in the day.

There was no explanation for what caused the blast but one U.S. officer said it was a suspected car bomb and that two soldiers had been hurt. A military spokesman said the reports were being checked but could not yet be confirmed.

The red Volkswagen Passat was torn apart by the explosion, with its roof sheared off and its interior shredded.

Earlier on Monday, a car was destroyed in a blast as it drove through a tunnel in central Baghdad. Two Iraqis were wounded. U.S. troops and Iraqi police said the explosion was probably caused by a land mine that had been planted there.

U.S. convoys pass through the tunnel several times a day.

(....)
The U.S. military says Operation Desert Scorpion aims to win hearts and minds as well as hunt die-hard Saddam loyalists. The mission involves humanitarian aid as well as raids.

But many Iraqis say U.S. raids have been heavyhanded, with houses ransacked and civilians assaulted. Many say they want occupying forces to leave Iraq as soon as possible.

In southern Baghdad two US soldiers guarding a filling station were killed in a hand grenade attack, an AFP photographer witnessed.

An Iraqi policeman confirmed the two soldiers were dead, adding that the attackers had fled before US military vehicles and a helicopter arrived and removed the bodies.

The photographer was then detained by US forces who held his press pass and confiscated his camera, preventing him from taking photographs of the scene for one hour.

Heavy losses in terror hunt

US special forces, whose superman image has created an aura in invulnerability around them, have unexpectedly disclosed heavy casualties in their worldwide hunt for Osama bin Laden and his terror associates.

Addressing a congressional panel today, Deputy Assistant Defence Secretary Marshall Billingslea said a total of 175 special operations forces (SOF) had been lost, killed or wounded since the beginning of a concerted post-September 11 counter-terrorism drive aimed at bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.

The US government consistently lied to the public about casualty rates, both US and Vietnamese casualties, and about the North Vietnamese ability to fight--constantly claiming that there was "light at the end of the tunnel."

U.S. Colonel Unaware of al-Qaida Arrests

Associated Press June 16 2003

KIRKUK, Iraq -- The commander of a brigade that U.S. Central Command said captured 74 suspected al-Qaida sympathizers said Monday that he had no knowledge of any such arrests.

"This is the first I've heard of this," said Col. William Mayville, commander of the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

According to a Central Command statement, the "the 173rd Brigade conducted a raid Thursday near Kirkuk after receiving intelligence information about alleged anti-coalition elements. They apprehended 74 suspected al-Qaida sympathizers."

The Washington Post reported Monday that 74 people were detained at a home being used as a mosque for two hours on Thursday. The Post quoted Army Capt. Trish Cawdrey, head of military intelligence in Kirkuk, as saying "they weren't al-Qaida sympathizers."

Mayville told The Associated Press that arrests of suspected insurgents are routinely made in Kirkuk but usually only a few at a time.

U.S. forces in northern Iraq are hunting members of the al-Qaida linked guerrilla group Ansar al-Islam, which before the war had been operating near the Iranian border.

SAMARRA CIVIL MILITARY OPERATIONS CENTER HIT BY MORTAR ROUND

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A Civil Military Operations Center (CMOC) in Samarra was hit by an 82mm mortar round June 18, killing one Iraqi and injuring 12 other Iraqis.

Soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division reported hearing three explosions and contacted the Samarra police station to investigate the incident. Samarra police reported finding those injured and killed in the attack.

Soldiers were unable to respond or find the perpetrators. This is one of numerous incidents recently where Iraqi resistors have attacked Coalition forces or Coalition Provisional Authority locations and injured or killed Iraqi citizens.

The mission of the CMOC is to coordinate the military and civilian aspects of the humanitarian assistance effort by providing the linkage between the military commander and the other governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations in Iraq.

No U.S. troops were injured during the attack. The incident is still under investigation.

A rocket-propelled grenade slammed into an electrical transformer near U.S. soldiers in Fallujah, wounding two troops and sending a tower of flame into the night sky, witnesses and the U.S. military said Friday.

The U.S. military said one of the soldiers suffered a concussion and the other bruises from the impact of the rockets exploding near two Bradley fighting vehicles at the gate.

The soldiers returned a barrage of gunfire into the darkness, said Soadad Khalil, the supervisor on duty at the power plant in Fallujah. More troops rushed to the area and detained 40 Iraqis trying to flee.

US troops kill five Iraqis in separate incidents west of Baghdad, British troops ambushed
24-06-2003, 12:54

Five Iraqis were killed and two US soldiers wounded in three attacks on US forces Tuesday in the Ramadi region west of Baghdad and in Fallujah, reports said.

Two attacks targeted US roadblocks in the town of Ramadi at midnight Monday and 4:30 am, according to US Army Sergeant Keith O'Donnel.

During the first attack, a car charged at a patrol and refused to stop when ordered to by US troops, who opened fire, killing one person and injuring another.

In the second attack, a first car charged soldiers and its passengers opened fire. US troops retaliated, killing the driver. According to AFP, A second car then drove at full speed towards the soldiers, and there was also fire from neighbouring buildings. This left two Iraqis dead and two US soldiers injure.

Elsewhere, unknown assailants launched rocket-propelled grenades early Tuesday at US troops guarding a power station in the town of Fallujah, west of Baghdad, AFP reported.

One Iraqi man was killed by US tank fire during subsequent searches.

The attack occurred at 1:15 am at a power distribution station, when an unknown number of men fired two rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) at the US troops guarding the facility, the report said.

US troops immediately fanned out around the al-Dubat neighbourhood, with tanks and infantry opening fire. One man, identified as Feras Fawzi al-Saab, 30, was standing at the gate of his house when he was shot dead, the report added. The man was decapitated by the shots.

US soldiers guarded the corpse, refusing to allow residents to remove it, it added.

Meanwhile, several British servicemen have been hurt in an machine gun attack north of the Iraqi city of Basra, the British Ministry of Defense said.

Sources said at least eight soldiers have been hurt, three seriously, in what is thought to be an ambush on a helicopter near the town of al-Amarah. "Our troops came under fire and there were several casualties but we have no confirmation of numbers or further details," a British spokesman said.

The latest attacks came after Iraqi oil ministry officials said Monday a fuel pipeline near the Syrian border had been sabotaged in the third attack on Iraq's energy infrastructure in 10 days.

The United States also suffered a verbal assault Monday from chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix, who told the Council for Foreign Relations in New York that Washington had jumped to conclusions about Iraqi weapons on the basis of "shaky" evidence.

"I don't exclude that the US inspectors ... may find something. It is possible," Blix said.

"But it is somewhat puzzling, I think, that you can have 100 percent certainty about the weapons of mass destruction and zero certainty about where they are," he said. (Albawaba.com)

Update:

British troops killed in Iraq

Six British military personnel have been killed and eight wounded in two separate incidents in southern Iraq, the UK prime minister's office has said. Downing Street said both incidents happened near the town of Amara, 200 kilometres (125 miles) north-west of Basra.

Dozens of US troops have been killed in attacks and accidents in Iraq since the war officially ended on 1 May, but these are by far the worst casualties among British forces - who control a wide swathe of southern Iraq - since that date.

Details of the first incident, in which the six people died, are still emerging.

Prime Minister Tony Blair's office said families of the soldiers killed were still being informed.

The UK Ministry of Defence said that in the second incident, troops from the 1st Battalion of the Parachute Regiment came under fire while on patrol south of Amara.

One soldier was wounded and two vehicles were destroyed, the MoD said in a statement.

"In responding to the incident, an RAF Chinook helicopter carrying a Quick Reaction Force came under fire as it landed," the statement said.

"Seven personnel on board the helicopter were wounded, three of them seriously.

"All were extracted by helicopter and are receiving treatment.

"We are investigating the incidents, including whether or not they are related."

(binnen daarentegen ... :loens: )

Zes Britse militairen gedood in vuurgevecht

American Killed in Ambush Near Baghdad
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 3:46 a.m. ET

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- A U.S. military vehicle was ambushed Thursday on the western outskirts of Baghdad, and at least one American soldier was killed, soldiers at the scene said Thursday.

The morning attack on the road leading to Baghdad International Airport apparently involved an explosive device operated by remote control, said the U.S. soldiers, who asked not to be named.

The soldier who died suffered a major wound in the face, the soldiers said.

New Explosion Hits Key Iraqi Oil Pipeline
Thu June 26, 2003 07:45 AM ET

By Hassan Hafidh
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An Iraqi oil pipeline was on fire on Thursday following an explosion, the sixth in the country in two weeks, a senior Iraqi oil official said.

"Early this morning another explosion damaged a pipeline near Al-Sitha near the River Tigris," Adal Al-Kazaz, director general of Iraq's Northern Oil Company, told Reuters. "I expect the incident to be another act of sabotage," Kazaz added.

He said the pipeline was carrying crude oil to Baiji refinery, 260 kilometers north of Baghdad and that the fire was still burning in the damaged pipeline.

It is the latest in a string of similar incidents hampering efforts to revive Iraq's battered oil sector.

Thursday's damage followed a blast on a crude pipeline on Tuesday near Barwanah. That pipeline carries crude to al-Daura refinery in Baghdad.

Kazaz said oil pumping had been suspended through the 0.375-inch pipeline near Barwanah, which links Kirkuk oilfields with Daura refinery in Baghdad.

He did not know exactly when the pipeline would be repaired but said it would take some time to fix it. It exploded and caught fire on Tuesday and this was blamed on unknown saboteurs.

"We need to clean the area from the leaked crude oil and after that we will start repairing it. Until this moment we are still cleaning the area of crude oil."

He said crude to Daura refinery was being supplied from Iraq's southern oilfields.

Iraq's de facto oil minister Thamir Ghadhban said on Tuesday the spate of attacks would hit crude supplies to refineries and electricity generation, but should not affect oil output, which is still around a quarter of pre-war levels.

The war-torn country resumed its first oil exports since the war on Sunday with a shipment from the Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan, using barrels already in storage there.

Irak / Zo ontzettend veel vermisten
door Eildert Mulder
Trouw 2003-06-27

American Soldier Shot Shopping in Baghdad-Witnesses
Jun 27, 2003
Source: Reuters

A U.S. soldier was shot in the head while buying digital video discs at a shop in Baghdad on Friday, the shop owner and other witnesses said. The U.S. military had no immediate comment on the report. It was not clear from witness accounts whether his wound was fatal.

The shop owner, who refused to give his name, said the soldier had come into the DVD shop in the Kazimiyah neighborhood in the northwest of the city at around 11 a.m. and picked up two discs.

"He took out dollars from his pocket and as I looked at the money I heard a bang. He froze and then fell backwards," the owner told Reuters Television. "Two other soldiers came in, picked him up and took him away."

Other witnesses corroborated the owner's version. One said he saw a young man shooting the soldier at close quarters in the lower head.

US soldier dies in convoy attack

One US soldier has been killed and four wounded in an attack on their convoy in Baghdad, a US military spokesman has said.

The attack on soldiers from the First Armoured Division took place overnight in the northern Sadr City district of the capital.

It is the latest in a series of strikes against US targets and brings the number of Americans killed in hostile action since the end of the conflict to at least 17.

The BBC's Peter Greste in Baghdad says the coalition is concerned that anti-US elements may also be planning attacks on soft targets such as United Nations staff and aid workers.

Iraqi Killed, Two U.S. Soldiers Wounded in Attack
Sun June 29, 2003 04:29 AM ET

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An Iraqi civilian was killed and two U.S. military police soldiers were wounded in Baghdad on Sunday when an explosion targeted a U.S. convoy, the latest in a series of hit-and-run strikes on occupation forces.

Hours earlier in a separate incident Saturday night, attackers lobbed two grenades near U.S. soldiers guarding the Iraqi National Museum, the soldiers said. The Americans escaped harm but a neighboring store was damaged. There were no casualties.

"We do not know if it intended to hit our position or to hit that little store that is down there. Both grenades exploded near that store," Sgt. John Kuzar, one of the soldiers guarding the museum, told Reuters Television.

A U.S. military spokesman said the two wounded Americans from the convoy were evacuated to a military hospital. There were no details on exactly how the Iraqi civilian died.

Two military vehicles were damaged, the spokesman said.

An ammunition dump has exploded in Iraq, killing about 30 people, it has been reported.
Many of the dead were said to have been looting the site at the time.

Local residents quoted by Reuters news agency said scores of people were also injured in the blast, which happened in a desert area near the town of Haditha, about 260 kilometres north-east of the capital, Baghdad.

Residents said United States forces arrested several looters but there has so far been no comment from the US military.

At least 30 Iraqis killed in ammunitions dump blast, three others die after ambush against US forces

At least 30 Iraqis have been killed and scores more wounded in a blast at an ammunitions dump in Iraq. According to media reports, the people had been trying to loot the dump.

Witnesses said Monday US forces arrested several looters after the blast. The explosion took place in a desert area north of the town of Haditha, some 250 kms northeast of Baghdad.

Elsewhere, Iraqi fighters fired a rocket propelled grenade at an American military vehicle in the town of Fallujah, injuring an "embedded" reporter with NBC News, the US military said Monday. Three Iraqis were killed when their pickup truck slammed into a vehicle helping evacuate the wounded reporter, AP said.

The rocket-propelled grenade hit an Avenger air defense vehicle - a Humvee equipped with a missile launcher - injuring the reporter who was traveling in the vehicle but leaving the soldiers unscathed, said a statement from U.S. Central Command.

Sgt. Patrick Compton, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, said the reporter was evacuated to a combat support hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Two of the pickup truck's civilian occupants died immediately, a military statement said. The other died later from his wounds. The soldiers - all with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division - were unhurt. (Albawaba.com)

Daarin staat o.a:

There is also a deeper reason for the animosity. In private, tribesmen say they are convinced the real motive behind the searches is that the US and Britain want to stay a long time in Iraq. "We are just waiting for our religious leaders to issue a fatwa against the occupation and then we will fight the occupation," says one.

http://www.jihadunspun.com/intheatre_internal.php?article=64108&list=/home.php&

America Is Acting Like A God On Earth

“America is acting like a god on earth. No accounting is demanded of it, but it demands accounting from others. America wanted to enter Iraq for its own reasons - not in order to disarm it of weapons of mass destruction or in order to save the Iraqi people from the hands of Saddam. They [the Americans] announced that they would enter Iraq even if Saddam left. The U.S. launched [a war] because it wanted to destroy Iraq's military power so as to clear the way for Israel, for its weapons and arsenal, and so that no one with these weapons will remain in the region except for Israel..."

The Oppressing Arab Leaders Must Learn Their Lesson from Saddam'

"The second lesson is that every oppressor comes to an end. Saddam Hussein and his regime were one of the most tyrannical oppressors on the face of the earth, particularly on our Arab and Muslim land. There is no doubt of this. Thank God I never said a word in praise of him - not before the war, not after it, and not even a long time ago - because I am against any oppressive and repressive regime and against every tyrannical dictator. The dictators are the ones who kill the people. The oppression and tyranny are what paved the way for the British and American entrance into the region, They are what caused the war in Kuwait and the previous war in Iraq..."

"Perhaps the oppressors and tyrants who spread corruption across the earth, oppress their peoples, humiliate the people, harm honor and rights and step on the necks of the peoples with their feet - perhaps they will learn the lesson from all this, and realize that their fate [will be] that of this tyrant and oppressor [Saddam]. If only the tyrants and oppressors ruling our Arab and Muslim lands would consider what happened to Saddam Hussein and [would realize] that they are next in line..."

"His weapons, army, party, palaces built with the money of the Iraqi people, and hiding places did not help Saddam - and no one wept for him... When the oppressor goes, no one weeps for him, no one in heaven and no one on earth. On the contrary; they part from him with curses; the tongues that were silent and could not talk during the time of the tyrants can now talk and curse the oppressors..."

There is No Difference Between Bush and the Mongol Leader Hulago

"The third lesson is that occupation is occupation, and invasion is invasion... This is not the first time Baghdad was taken... This city fell to the Mongols. Hulago entered Baghdad and his soldiers struck the people with the sword. Blood flowed in the streets, in the houses, and above the roofs. Even in the drainpipes, rivers of blood flowed... and the Tigris became red with blood. During this war, two million were killed, and some say a million and half, and at the very least a million... They [the invaders] reached the libraries. [Baghdad] was the capital of knowledge, education, and culture... The books were thrown into the Tigris until the river became black with their ink. There were days when it became red with blood, and there were days when it became black with ink..."

"This was also the fate of Baghdad in the 21st century; they allowed the looters to loot the museums, the libraries, and the universities of Baghdad. They showed us some of the people while they were looting, but they did not show us who opened the locked doors. This they did not film. This was organized looting, behind which stand international gangs. Unfortunately, we did not see the U.N. acting, fiery and raging, as it acted when the Taliban destroyed the statues of Buddha... This is what the U.S. did, the country of the 21st century in the uni-polar world. What is the difference between the old Hulago and the new Hulago? What is the difference between Bush and the Mongol king?..."

Do Not Go to Extremes in Vengeance Upon Ba'ath Party Members

"The fourth lesson is that I recommend to the Iraqi people, with all its communities and ethnic and religious groups - Arabs, Kurds, Turkmenis, Assyrians, and [those of] other ethnic [origins], Muslims and Christians, Sunnis, and Shi'ites - all must stand in a single row. The disasters unite those harmed. In such a disaster, there is no point in someone saying 'I am a Sunni' or 'I am a Shi'ite;' 'I am a Kurd' or 'I am a Turkmeni.'"

"All have a common interest, one adversary, and one battle. They must forget their marginal quarrels and not listen to [those] who preach civil war. They must stand together and not go to extremes in taking vengeance upon the members of the Ba'ath. Many thousands joined the Ba'ath Party without believing in it. This party ruled for 35 years, and people had to get along. Many of them behaved as if they were Ba'ath Party members but in their hearts they cursed it. There is no escape from taking this into consideration, and from refraining from taking vengeance upon anyone formally considered a Ba'ath member. The true Ba'ath members number no more than a few thousand, while the Iraqi people are not Ba'athist; they were repressed in the grip of the tyrannical regime that silenced them..."

The Fall of Baghdad Was Due to Ba'ath Party Secularism

"When the Americans entered, the forces of the Ba'ath Party fled. Unfortunately, there was no one to stand fast against the advance [of the enemy], because it was a secular party not based on implanting faith in hearts and confidence in souls, and faith in the strength of Allah, in predestination, and in the world to come. They did not stand fast, and we were surprised to see that they collapsed overnight. Where are the hundreds of thousands? Where is the Republican Guard? Where are Saddam's Fedayeen? Where are the warriors of the party? All these evaporated..."

US army attacked in Baghdad

US troops have come under fresh attack in the Iraqi capital Baghdad with reports saying at least three soldiers were killed.

Eyewitnesses say an American armoured car blew up in the west of the city and that one civilian was also killed in the blast.

The explosion was one of several incidents reported on Tuesday, including an attack on a mosque in the flashpoint town of Falluja that killed at least five Iraqis.

The Baghdad blast appears to be the latest in a series of attacks on US forces in Iraq, which have killed at least 16 American soldiers since the war was declared over in May.

Eyewitnesses said the explosion happened after a car bomb had gone off while another said the vehicle had been hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Ya'aroub Abdulillah, a local resident, told Reuters news agency: "We were sitting at a cafeteria near the university when we heard a large explosion,"

"We rushed to the site and found two cars burning, one American and one Iraqi. US troops pulled out from the vehicle four soldiers."

Some eyewitnesses to the blast told the BBC they were pleased by the attack on a US target.

"They really have very little sympathy for the American fatalities," said the BBC's Magdi Abdelhadi from the scene.

Mohammad Owdeh, a local resident, told Reuters: "These explosions are a message to the Americans because they have done nothing for the Iraqi people. There will be more and more explosions."

Our correspondent said the US military had cordoned off the area close to the university in the al-Mustansiriyah district to carry out an investigation.

"There are a number of armoured vehicles with soldiers on top of them, with the guns pointing in various directions," said Magdi Abdelhadi.

In the southern Iraqi city of Yusufiyeh, an American military vehicle plunged into a hole on a road south of Baghdad, while angry Iraqis set fire to a second vehicle that came to their aid, with Al-Jazeera reporting that two U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter were killed in the incident.

In a conflicting report, AFP quoted witnesses as saying that two American soldiers were only injured.

"It was an accident. There were two vehicles and the first drove into a hole in the highway. The second stopped, the soldiers got out, and Iraqis approached the second vehicle and set fire to it," Nabil al-Raheem, an Iraqi, said.

He added that two U.S. soldiers had been injured when their vehicle crashed, but did not say how the Iraqis had set fire to the other vehicle.

Witnesses had earlier said the blaze was the result of a rocket-propelled grenade attack.

Another witness, Saif Taoma, backed up Raheem's account, adding that Iraqis had poured gasoline on the second vehicle to set it on fire.

"U.S. soldiers then started shooting in the air to clear the area," he said.

He added that a helicopter had arrived to evacuate the two injured soldiers, while U.S. troops removed the first vehicle.

The two-meter deep hole was filled with rubbish, suggesting it had not been recently created, and was not an ambush.

An American military spokeswoman was unable to confirm the incident, which occurred on the southern highway near Yusufiyeh, about 20 kilometers (13 miles) from Baghdad.

Two Iraqis killed, at least eight US soldiers wounded in separate incidents

An American Army truck hit an explosive west of Baghdad wounding six U.S. soldiers early Thursday, and Iraqi fighters in the capital wounded two other American soldiers in separate incidents, U.S. military officials and witnesses said, according to AP.

An explosion during a demonstration in Baqouba, 55 kilometers northeast of Baghdad, killed one person and injured at least five. The demonstrators were protesting the U.S. Army's alleged detention of the city's top Shiite cleric. U.S. soldiers also injured a six-year-old boy and killed another bystander, as well as an armed Iraqi, military officials and civilian witnesses said.

Witnesses said a plastic bag filled with explosives exploded in the middle of a crowd of several hundred demonstrators, who were protesting the U.S. Army's detention of Ali Abdul Kareem al Madani, the city's top Shiite cleric.

After the blast outside the governor's office, people screamed and ran in different directions. U.S. soldiers patrolling from atop a nearby building fired shots into the air.

On Thursday morning, many of the cleric's books were strewn about on the floor of the home and several vehicles outside had their windshields smashed. Witnesses said the U.S. troops caused the damage.

In Ramadi, some 100 kilometers west of Baghdad, a two-Humvee convoy struck an explosive early Thursday, wounding six soldiers, said Sgt. Patrick Compton, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad.

And ambushers fired a grenade at a U.S. Army convoy in downtown Baghdad Thursday morning, wounding one soldier. American troops who returned fire killed an Iraqi bystander, witnesses said.

As the convoy moved along Baghdad's Haifa Street, a man fired a rocket-propelled grenade while standing in a car's sunroof; the grenade exploded beneath an Army Humvee, said a bystander. Most of the soldiers jumped from the Humvee before the explosion, he said. One soldier who appeared to be injured was evacuated.

As the attackers sped away, U.S. soldiers began firing wildly, witnesses said, killing the driver of another car.

In a firefight in the west Baghdad neighborhood of Kadamiyah, an American soldier from the Army's 1st Armored Division was wounded Thursday morning and a six-year-old boy was injured, Compton said. (Albawaba.com)

Two US troops killed in new attacks in Baghdad

Two American soldiers were killed in separate attacks on their convoys in the Iraqi capital, the military said Monday.

The first soldier died in a firefight late Sunday after two armed assailants opened fire, said Sgt. Patrick Compton, a spokesman for the military. The soldiers responded with fire, killing one of the attackers and wounding the other. The wounded suspect was taken into custody.

In the second convoy attack, Iraqi fighters threw a homemade bomb at a U.S. vehicle early Monday morning, killing a soldier. Both of the dead American solders were from the Army's 1st Armored Division, the Germany-based division which is charged with occupying Baghdad. They were in different convoys.

Elsewhere, four US troops were wounded in a new attack on occupying forces in Iraq. They were injured in an ambush with rocket-propelled grenades in Ramadi, a town about 100 kilometers west of Baghdad, a U.S. military spokesman said.

Grisly Death Enrages Anti-U.S. Town in Iraq
Mon July 7, 2003 07:13 AM ET
By Michael Georgy

RAMADI, Iraq (Reuters) - The gruesome death of an Iraqi man whose head was shot off inflamed anti-American rage in the volatile town of Ramadi on Monday after a night of armed attacks which wounded four U.S. troops.

Several Iraqis gathered around his bullet ridden car where a piece of skull lay among the shattered windshield glass on the floorboard. Another crowd walked past pools of blood at Ramadi General Hospital and watched a doctor pull plastic sheeting off his corpse that was punctured by bullets they said were fired by U.S. troops occupying the town, around 100 km (60 miles) west of Baghdad. "You will see what will happen to the Americans now. You will see what we will do to them," hospital administrator Taha Hussein told Reuters.

On Saturday, seven recruits to a U.S.-backed Iraqi police force were killed in Ramadi when a remote-controlled bomb exploded outside a police station.

Ramadi is part of a mainly Sunni Muslim area to the north and west of Baghdad where U.S. forces have faced much of the most violent resistance to their occupation of Iraq. The region was a bastion of support for Saddam Hussein, himself a Sunni. "The Americans are terrorists. They don't respect us. They enter our houses and frisk our women. They handcuff us at checkpoints and step on our necks," said Abu Mohsen. "Now look at this. They just shoot at cars and kill innocent people," he said pointing to the body of the decapitated man on a stretcher outside the morgue.

CONFUSION

The circumstances surrounding the death of the man, identified by a hospital official as Ibrahim Himoud, were unclear. Iraqi witnesses said U.S. troops brought him to the hospital and said he was shot after running a checkpoint. They also said a second civilian was killed. A U.S. military spokesman said the decapitated man was caught in the crossfire after six Iraqi assailants ambushed a U.S. position and it was not clear who shot him. A spokesman in Baghdad said four soldiers had been wounded in the ambush. "At about that time, one of our vehicles was attempting to impose a roadblock. A Toyota truck approached. One of the men in the Toyota truck was shot and killed. The other was detained for questioning," Captain Michael Calvert told Reuters.

The mortar attack on Sunday night was the fifth in Ramadi in seven days, said Calvert. Rocket-propelled grenades have been the weapons of choice in recent weeks. The U.S.-backed mayor's office was also hit by small arms fire and then grenade attacks a few minutes later, Calvert said.

U.S. troops are not taking any risks. They sit sideways in their vehicles with M-16 rifles ready for any assailant on the grim streets of Ramadi. At the entrance of a heavily fortified palace complex once owned by Saddam, U.S. troops watched a truck tow a jeep with multiple bullet holes in its windshield.

"We want Saddam. Look what the Americans are doing. They are killing us. The attacks on Americans will get worse. It will be Jihad (holy war)," said Yassin Mishaal.

Eight U.S. Soldiers Killed In Iraq
U.S. forces come under almost daily attacks in Iraq

BAGHDAD, July 8 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) - Eight U.S. soldiers were killed when two armored vehicles came under a fresh grenade attack in Baghdad early Tuesday, July 8, one day after two soldiers were killed and four others wounded in the occupied, restive capital.

The attack by rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) occurred at 9.15 local time (5.14 GMT), eyewitnesses told IslamOnline.net.

All the eight soldiers were probably charred in the vehicles targeted by the attack in the main street linking the Baghdad International Airport and Al-Amel and Al-Bayaa street to the west, according to the eyewitnesses account, yet to be confirmed by independent sources.

Similar raids on the U.S. occupation forces were reported in the same area, which is leading to the largest American military base at the Baghdad airport.

At least seven US soldiers injured in Iraq as occupation forces offer rewards for information on attacks
08-07-2003

Iraqi fighters dropped a homemade bomb from a bridge onto a passing U.S. military convoy in Baghdad on Tuesday, while another military vehicle struck a land mine in the capital. At least seven U.S. soldiers were injured in those and other attacks throughout the country, the military said, according to AP.

Two soldiers were injured in the bridge attack, and two others when the military vehicle struck a land mine, said Sgt. Patrick Compton. In Kirkuk, Iraqi assailants fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a military convoy, injuring three servicemen. The patrol returned fire, but there was no word of Iraqi casualties or arrests.

Elsewhere, unidentified assailants lobbed grenades at a police station in northern Baghdad overnight, injuring two Iraqi policemen, US officials said on Tuesday.

At least two attackers detonated three or more grenades and raked with gunfire a police station in the city's Ash-Shab district, where US military police are positioned to train members of Iraq's new police force.

"Two Iraqi police were wounded by shrapnel, one in the hand and one in the pelvis," a US intelligence officer told AFP.

An exchange of fire ensued, in which the American army said it believed one attacker was injured but managed to flee. No Americans were reported injured. Witnesses said three Iraqis — including a 13-year-old boy — were killed following this attack. Witnesses told Associated Press Television News that those killed when troops returned fire were not among those who attacked the police station.

Iraq-Turkey Oil Pipeline Hit by Sabotage
Tue July 8, 2003 04:09 AM ET
By Michael Georgy

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's northern export pipeline to Turkey was damaged by a new sabotage blast over the weekend and repairs will take two weeks, a senior Iraqi oil ministry official said on Tuesday.

The official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters Iraq was also facing what he called widespread "economic sabotage" along a pipeline from Iraq's southern oilfields.

"The Iraq-Turkey pipeline was sabotaged 36 hours ago and will take two weeks to repair," he said.

"It will take two weeks to repair if there are no new explosions and we still have several damaged areas on the pipeline that are still to be repaired from earlier explosions."

The weekend attack on the Kirkuk line to the Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan delivers a further blow to Iraqi hopes of raising crude exports.

Two American soldiers killed in Iraq
16-07-2003, 07:19

A U.S. soldier was killed and two others were injured Wednesday when a powerful blast went off as their convoy made its way along a highway west of Baghdad, AP reported.

The explosion was reported at about 9 a.m. as a 20-vehicle military convoy was passing a wrecked car that had been abandoned alongside the road, Spc. Jose Colon told The Associated Press. The soldier that died was blown out of a truck that was nearest to the blast, Colon said. Soldiers said a bomb was hidden in the car wreckage.

Spc. Carlos McKenzie said the supply convoy, which was on its way to a U.S. base in the desert near Iraq's border with Jordan, did not have enough protection from more heavily armed units.

Also Wednesday, a U.S. Marine died in the southern city of Hilla when he fell off a building he was guarding. The soldier was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. (Albawaba.com)

US hunts Saddam allies in Mosul

American forces in northern Iraq have been involved in a clash in the city of Mosul and there are reports that key allies of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein may have been seized.

"Individuals of very high interest to the coalition forces were hiding out in the building," Lieutenant Colonel William Bishop of the 101st Airborne Division told Reuters news agency.

"This morning we went to the building and surrounded it, and detained several of these high-interest personalities," he said.

According to local residents, there had been rumours that Saddam Hussein's sons Qusay and Uday had been hiding in the city.

An Iraqi journalist interviewed by the BBC said the clash started when US troops tried to search the home of a local Iraqi leader.

US forces have so far announced the capture of 34 of the 55 Iraqis on the most-wanted list of members of the ousted regime, but Saddam Hussein and his sons have not been found.

U.S. Vehicle Blown Up in Baghdad - Witness
Thu July 24, 2003 10:21 AM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A U.S. military vehicle blew up in a Baghdad street on Thursday, an amateur cameraman who filmed the smoldering wreckage told Reuters.
Local people said the explosion happened in the late afternoon in the capital's southern Dora district. The cameraman's film showed the still smoldering wreckage of what appeared to be a Humvee. U.S. soldiers cordoned the area and inspected the site.

There was no word on casualties but it seemed likely that no one traveling in the car could have escaped injury. A U.S. military spokesman said he was unaware of any incident.

It was not clear what caused the explosion. U.S. vehicles have fallen frequent victim in Iraq to improvised mines, roadside bombs and rocket-propelled grenade attacks.

Three US soldiers guarding an Iraqi children's hospital have been killed and four injured in a grenade attack, the US military has said.

The attack occurred shortly before midday in Baqubah, northeast of Baghdad.

All the soldiers were from the 4th Infantry Division, which was involved in an operation on Thursday against Iraqis suspected of being Saddam Hussein's bodyguards.

The casualties - whose names have not yet been released - were taken to an American medical facility. Three soldiers have been treated and returned to their units.

The deaths bring to 47 the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq since President George W Bush declared the war was over.

Earlier, the US military said five American soldiers had been killed in attacks since the killing of Saddam Hussein's sons Uday and Qusay Hussein on Tuesday.

Basra: Oil pipeline on fire
From correspondents in Basra
July 29, 2003

A PIPELINE a few kilometres southeast of Basra, Southern Iraq, is on fire, probably from a rocket-propelled grenade attack, an official said.

A huge plume of black smoke rose from the pipeline, which Saddam Hussein loyalists used before and during the US-led war in Iraq to fill trenches around the southern city of Basra with fuel, which was burnt to create a smokescreen to advancing coalition forces.

"Such a fire cannot happen naturally, I think someone bombed it," said Nasser Shakr, fire brigade chief of Iraq's Southern Oil Co.

One resident of the district close to the fire told AFP that he had seen two men armed with a rocket launcher heading for the pipeline.

Shakr said the attack occurred at 4 am local time (0900 AEST) and that the fire should be under control by the end of Tuesday, adding that firefighters were waiting for a bulldozer to clear access right up to the blaze.

Iraq bomb kills US soldier

A US soldier has been killed and two others injured in a bomb attack in the Iraqi town of Baquba, north-east of Baghdad.

The attack happened late on Sunday, according to a military spokesman.

The soldier - from the Fourth Infantry Division - was killed as he and colleagues were guarding the town's police station, about 70 kilometres (40 miles) from Baghdad.

The killing brings to 57 the number of American soldiers killed in attacks since major combat operations ended on 1 May.

At around the same time as the Baquba attack two grenades were set off under a couple of lorries close to the UK Government office in Baghdad.

Two Iraqis were injured. A coalition spokesperson said the British office had not been the target and that no staff were injured.

U.S. Soldier Killed in Bomb Attack West of Baghdad
Tue August 12, 2003 01:24 PM ET

By Huda Majeed Saleh

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier was killed and two soldiers were wounded in a bomb attack Tuesday west of Baghdad, as Kurds near the Iranian border said they had captured dozens of militant fighters trying to infiltrate Iraq.

In the northern city of Mosul, a U.S. Humvee was destroyed in a blast and witnesses said four casualties were taken away. The U.S. Army said it had no details.

U.S. forces occupying Iraq come under daily attack, and Washington says die-hard Saddam Hussein loyalists and some foreign militants are behind the guerrilla campaign

Adel Murad, a spokesman for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), told Reuters in Baghdad that Kurdish Peshmerga militiamen had rounded up 50 people near the Iranian border -- some of them members of the shadowy Ansar al-Islam group, which Washington has linked to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.

Paul Bremer, Iraq's U.S. governor, told a news conference that Ansar al-Islam was one of the groups under suspicion for a truck bomb attack on the Jordanian embassy in Baghdad last week that killed at least 17 people and wounded scores.

He said the attack was "an act of irresponsible terrorism by criminals" but it was too early to say who was to blame.

"It's possible this attack was conducted by foreign terrorists. It is also possible it was conducted by Iraqis," he said. "The investigation by Iraqi police is going forward."

Bremer said that although it was not yet known whether Ansar al-Islam were behind the embassy attack, there was no doubt the group was linked to Osama bin Laden's network.

Blast Hits Baghdad Water Supply; U.S. Soldiers Shot
Sun August 17, 2003 04:52 AM ET

By Hassan Hafidh
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A major water pipeline in northern Baghdad was breached on Sunday, flooding nearby streets and cutting off the supply to parts of the Iraqi capital, after what locals said was a bomb attack.

Sabotage of fuel pipelines, power cables and water pipes has dogged attempts by the U.S.-led administration to rebuild Iraq's decrepit oil industry and restore basic services.

The main oil export pipeline to Turkey -- a crucial economic lifeline for Iraq -- was shut down last week just days after reopening, following technical hitches and a bomb attack that sparked a fire.

Paul Bremer, the U.S. governor of Iraq, said the closure of that pipeline was costing the country $7 million a day.

Washington blames die-hard supporters of deposed leader Saddam Hussein and foreign militant groups for sabotage of infrastructure and attacks on U.S. forces that have killed 60 American troops since the United States declared major combat over on May 1.

In the latest ambush in Baghdad, two U.S. soldiers were shot and wounded as they left a restaurant on Saturday, the military said. Both were in a stable condition in hospital.

Iraqi police and security guards have also come under attack from anti-U.S. fighters who accuse them of collaborating with occupying troops.

In the northern city of Mosul, the headquarters of an Iraqi civilian security force was attacked with machinegun fire and a rocket-propelled grenade on Saturday afternoon.

One of the security guards was killed and four were wounded, their colleagues told Reuters. The security force was set up to help guard hospitals, schools and other facilities.

Earlier on Saturday, Mosul's police chief was wounded in a gun attack on a police convoy.

Two American soldiers dead in Iraq as massive raid takes place to catch gang leader
26-08-2003, 12:38

An American soldier was killed Tuesday after a support convoy was hit with a roadside bomb in the town of Hamariyah, the military announced. Two other soldiers were wounded in the blast, said U.S. Central Command spokesman Maj. Mike Escudie.

Earlier, a US soldier has died from bullet wounds sustained in a "non-hostile incident", which is still under investigation, the US army said in a statement Tuesday.

A soldier with the 130th Engineers Brigade succumbed to gunshot wounds in a "non-hostile incident," which took place Monday in Baghdad, the army said.

In the meantime, hundreds of American troops, backed by helicopters, tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles, launched a raid in Khalis Tuesday in an attempt to capture the leader of a "notorious" gang wanted for attacks against US forces and "terrorizing" Iraqi civilians, according to the AP.

Col. David Hogg, commander of 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, said forces had captured 24 suspected gang members, but had not found its leader, Lateef Hamed al Kubaishat, also known as Lateef by US forces.

Hogg added that US authorities consider the "brigands" to be a "terrorist organization."

"Their primary focus is probably criminal activity, but they have attacked coalition forces through direct and indirect means," Hogg told the AP. "As long as he (Lateef) is in place we will not be able to establish the conditions for the Iraqi police to establish law and order in the area."

He added that the local police were scared of Lateef's gang, which operates out of the town of Khalis.

"This operation will go a long way to show the Iraqi population that we are doing this for them. It's part of our mission to provide a safe and secure environment so they can continue to build government structures and security structures," Hogg said.

Lateef's gang is involved in "all types of illicit activities from weapons sales to you name it. We know he's setting up illegal checkpoints to attack, rob and kill Iraqis," Hogg said.

Lateef - described by US intelligence as being 35 years old, 6 foot 2 inches, 220 pounds and "stooped like a gorilla," was imprisoned serving multiple life sentences for murder until former leader Saddam Hussein granted amnesty to all prisoners several months ago. (Albawaba.com)

Big shootout west of Fallujah, at least three Army vehicles including tank transporter burned
By Associated Press, 9/11/2003 13:29

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) A big firefight broke out Thursday about 60 miles west of Baghdad, and witnesses said there were U.S. casualties. The U.S. military said it could not immediately confirm the incident.

Witnesses said the firefight started with an attack on an American convoy.

But witness accounts of such attacks on American forces are often unreliable, frequently including inflated body counts. Those who claimed to have seen the firefight Thursday gave reports ranging from several dead and wounded to just seven wounded.

Associated Press Television News pictures from Khaldia, 18 miles west of the city of Fallujah, showed a burning tank transport truck, a burning five-ton truck and at least one burning Humvee.

Kanaan Ali Ibrahim, a witness, said the convoy was moving from Habaniya to Ramadi when Iraqi ''mujahedeen'' ambushed it with rocket-propelled grenades.

He said he believed U.S. soldiers were killed and wounded.

A small crowd gathered at the scene of the attack and began shouting jubilantly ''Allahu Akbar,'' or God is great, and ''Oh, Iraq, we sacrifice our lives and blood for you.''

An Abrams tank could be seen on the APTN video and there was the sound of a prolonged gunbattle, with the shooting appearing to be coming mainly from the tank and other heavy guns. The Iraqi guerrillas that carry out such ambushes normally carry only Kalashnikov automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.

The Fallujah region, part of the ''Sunni Triangle,'' has been one of the most dangerous for U.S. soldiers. The triangle is the region north and west of Baghdad where support for ousted dictator Saddam Hussein runs strongest.

Two soldiers killed, seven wounded in firefight during Ramadi raid

The Associated Press
9/12/03 7:23 AM

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Two U.S. soldiers were killed and seven wounded early Friday in a shootout that broke out during a raid in Ramadi, the military reported.

The U.S. Army gave no other information on the incident, which took place during one of the bloodiest nights of fighting since the end of major conflict on May 1.

An unknown number of Iraqi police were killed or injured also early Friday near Fallujah, which is between Ramadi and Baghdad. The shooting in Fallujah, 30 miles west of Baghdad, was believed to have involved American forces, Fallujah police and guards at the Jordanian Hospital at the scene of the firefight.

Bomb Kills U.S. Soldier in Restive Iraqi Town

Sun September 14, 2003 04:14 AM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier was killed and three more were wounded Sunday when their convoy ran over a bomb planted on a road in the volatile Iraqi town of Falluja, the U.S.-led military force in Iraq said.
The town, a hotbed of opposition to the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq, was the scene of anti-American protests on Saturday after U.S. soldiers shot dead 10 members of a local security force, apparently mistaking them for resistance fighters.

"At 0800 (midnight EDT) this morning in Falluja, a vehicle convoy hit an IED (improvised explosive device)... one soldier was killed," a spokeswoman for the occupying force said.

Witnesses in Falluja, 30 miles west of Baghdad, said a Humvee military vehicle had been destroyed in the attack. One soldier lay motionless by the road near the Humvee after the attack as other soldiers combed the area.

U.S. Soldier Killed in Baghdad Attack
Mon September 15, 2003 07:04 AM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - One U.S. soldier was killed in a rocket-propelled grenade attack while on patrol in central Baghdad Monday, the U.S. military said.
A spokeswoman said the soldier from the 1st Armored Division died in hospital after the attack at 1:10 am. No one else was wounded, she said.

The death brought to 73 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in hostile action in Iraq since Washington declared major combat over on May 1.

Iraqi guerrillas have concentrated their attacks in the capital and the Sunni heartland to the city's north and west.

The relatives of slain men, who had been heavily beaten and shot dead in their heads, had a fit of hysterics and fainted when they saw the corpses.

IHA correspondent in Basra says that killed men had been blindfolded and their arms had been tied up behind them. There had been no news about slain men over the 5 days.

Meanwhile, the cameramen of IHA and Reuters news agencies were detained by the members of Hizb-ul Dava organization. After 4-hour interrogation, the militants confiscated their cameras and then video cassets and then were set free.

CONVOY ATTACK: 'EIGHT AMERICANS KILLED'

US forces are reported to have taken heavy casualties in a series of attacks on an American convoy in the town of Khaldiyah, west of Baghdad.

One television report says eight Americans have been killed and one wounded.

Journalists said two US tanks surrounded a smouldering transport truck and helicopters hovered above.

Dubai-based Al-Arabiya television reported that eight Americans were killed and one wounded.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene could not get close enough to verify the casualty reports and was fired on by one of the tanks with three rounds from its 50-calibre machine gun.

It appeared the Americans were trying to protect themselves until reinforcements arrived.

The Americans were taking fire from unknown positions.

U.S. Soldier Killed by Guerrillas West of Baghdad
Mon September 29, 2003 09:04 AM ET
BAGHDAD - A U.S. soldier was killed and another was wounded on Monday when guerrillas attacked a military convoy in a restive area west of Baghdad, a U.S. military spokesman said.
Lieutenant Colonel George Krivo told reporters in Baghdad the morning attack took place in the town of Habbaniya, about 45 miles from Baghdad -- an area where U.S. forces come under almost daily attack from guerrillas opposed to the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq.

Eighty-one U.S. soldiers have been killed in attacks since President Bush declared major combat in Iraq over on May 1 following the war that ousted Saddam Hussein, according to official U.S. figures.

"There was an engagement this morning. It was an IED (improvised explosive device) attack on a convoy," Krivo told a news briefing. "There was a coalition soldier injured and one coalition soldier killed in action."

After the explosives attack, soldiers exchanged fire with guerrillas at the scene for several hours, Krivo said.

Details of the incident appeared to match reports from residents in the area, who said the soldiers had called in helicopters which also opened fire.

The residents said the fighting broke out after a U.S. vehicle ran over a bomb. Assailants emerged later, firing rocket-propelled grenades at the soldiers who returned fire.

One man said at least three Iraqis had been wounded.

US forces attacked in Iraq

Tuesday 30 September 2003

United States troops came under attack in three different areas of Iraq on Tuesday morning.

Our correspondent, quoting eyewitnesses, reported that one US tank was totally damaged when an explosive device detonated on the main road in al-Habbaniya area.

Al-Habbaniya is to the west of the flashpoint town of Ramadi, which is west of Baghdad. It was not immediately clear if the US suffered any casualties.

In another attack, a US patrol was hit by an explosive device in al-Hashimiya area, east of Baquba city. One US military vehicle was damaged, eyewitnesses told Aljazeera.

Civilians killed

In the third attack, a US position in the northern town of Hawija, near Kirkuk, came under mortar attack at dawn and a fire broke out inside the building, but it was not immediately clear if there were casualties, witnesses said.

"I was asleep on the roof of my building when I heard two explosions and I saw flames bursting from the technical institute where US troops are positioned," said resident Usama Jumaa Fayad.

He said the building was hit by two mortar rounds. US forces were not immediately available to confirm the report.

Ali Ahmad Jaburi, who also heard the explosions, said the attack was "apparently organised and planned" because it came a day after the reported death of a child in Hawija, 50km west of the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk.

Hawija's hospital director, Dr Jasim Abd Allah Jiburi, accused US troops of shooting on hundreds of demonstrators who pelted them with stones, killing 10-year-old Husayn Dakhil Ahmad and wounding 25-year-old Meaad Abd Allah in the chest.

But US forces on Tuesday denied the claim. "Somebody within the crowd shot him (the boy), not US forces. US forces did not fire into the crowd," said 4th Infantry Division (4th ID) spokesperson Major Josslyn Aberle.

She also disputed Jiburi's account of the protest, describing the demonstration as "some sort of salary dispute ... not anti-US, nor pro-Saddam."

An AFP correspondent on the scene said the casualties occurred when about 500 protesters, carrying portraits of Saddam Hussein, took to the streets of Hawija and began pelting US soldiers with stones.

Soldier dies

In Falluja, west of Baghdad, the US military confirmed that one American soldier was killed and one wounded in a bomb attack, on a convoy on Monday.

A military spokeswoman, who would not give her name, said the convoy was attacked about 9:15 am (0515 GMT) by an "improvised explosive device" in the town of Habbaniyah, near to where the Americans had a large base.

An Iraqi police officer told AFP that unidentified resistance fighters fired four mortar rounds on Monday morning at a US position in the centre of Kirkuk, an Iraqi police station and an army rehabilitation centre.

The mortars apparently failed to hit their targets and caused no casualties or damage.

US forces have not restored security to war-torn Iraq since occupying Baghdad in April and continue to come under daily attack.

A military spokesman admitted that six US soldiers were wounded in a bomb attack on Sunday against a convoy in the hotspot town of Falluja, 50km west of Baghdad.

The convoy was hit by an "improvised explosive device". The wounded soldiers are said to be in stable condition.

War rages on

US President George Bush declared major combat over on 1 May, but this was hard to believe in the town of Khaldiyah as US troops used tanks, helicopters and a F-16 jet to battle their way out of an ambush.

For more than four hours, US soldiers and Iraqi resistance fighters fought pitched battles after a convoy came under rocket-propelled grenade attack.

One resident said he saw "many" occupation forces killed. The US army said two soldiers were wounded.

Eye witnesses also said four Iraqi civilians were hurt, including an elderly woman who was taken by US helicopter to a hospital after being hit in the shoulder.

And in the southern Iraqi city of Najaf, a bomb was found and defused in a bag on a busy commercial street.

The incident took place just a month after a blast in the city killed prominent cleric Ayat Allah Muhammad Baqr al-Hakim.

Iraqi police clash with demonstrators in Baghdad as another US soldier dies
01-10-2003, 08:07

Iraqi police opened fire in downtown Baghdad Wednesday morning after unemployed demonstrators stormed a police station and threw stones at officers, a policeman said. At least one demonstrator was injured in the shooting, The AP reoprted.

When the shooting stopped about 30 minutes later, fist fights broke out between some demonstrators and police. The protesters said they had been promised police jobs in July, but the positions had not been given out. They charged that police were demanding bribes in return for hiring them.

Several police officers were wounded and the demonstrators set two cars on fire.

Some 45 minutes after the shooting broke out, American soldiers arrived at the scene of the violence.

Elsewhere, a U.S. soldier was killed Tuesday, probably as a result of "friendly fire", at a base located north of the capital of Baghdad, according to the U.S. military Wednesday. (Albawaba.com)

At Least Three U.S. Soldiers Wounded in Iraq Attack
Wed October 1, 2003 11:00 AM ET
TIRKIT, Iraq (Reuters) - At least three U.S. soldiers were wounded in a bomb attack on Wednesday close to the main American military base in Saddam Hussein's home town of Tikrit, a Reuters correspondent at the scene said.
The bomb exploded shortly before 5 p.m. as a patrol traveled along a road just outside the base, one of Saddam's former palaces, around 110 miles north of Baghdad.

U.S. forces in the Tikrit area have come under frequent attack from guerrillas, believed by U.S. commanders to be mainly Saddam loyalists and foreign Islamic militants.

The U.S.-led military task force in Iraq says more than 700 soldiers have been wounded in attacks since May 1, when major combat was declared over in the war that ousted Saddam. (Reuters)

One Killed, Several Wounded in Battle in Iraq Town
Thu October 2, 2003 08:29 AM ET
FALLUJA, Iraq (Reuters) - A gunbattle erupted on Thursday in the Iraqi town of Falluja, a center of anti-U.S. sentiment, and police said several people were wounded when American troops returned fire after coming under attack.
Iraqi policeman Asaad Abdul-Karim said an Iraqi man was killed and a woman and a six-year-old girl wounded by U.S. gunfire. They were apparently caught in the crossfire during the battle in which two Iraqi police were also wounded, he said.

The U.S. military in Baghdad said it had no immediate information on the incident.

"They shot a woman, who is in a critical condition, and also a young girl," Abdul-Karim said. "Two Iraqi police officers who were sealing off the area were also wounded."

After the battle, U.S. troops began searching a building from where shots had come.

South of Falluja, a U.S. convoy was also attacked on Thursday with a roadside bomb and rocket-propelled grenades, locals said. Hours after the attack, one U.S. military vehicle was still in flames at the scene. There was no information on any casualties.

At least one US soldier has been killed and two others wounded in a roadside attack north-east of Baghdad, military officials said.

A spokesman said a military convoy was ambushed with a bomb and small arms fire in the town of Jalawla, Reuters news agency reports.

This is the third American death in Iraq in 24 hours.

Earlier on Monday, Iraqi officials revealed that the oil minister, Ibrahim Bahr al-Uloum, survived an assassination attempt in Baghdad on Sunday.

Officials said Mr al-Uloum, a member of the US-appointed Governing Council, was travelling in a five-car convoy when three gunmen opened fire from a passing car.

Also in the car with Mr al-Uloum was Nabil al-Musawi, an aide to Council member Ahmed Chalabi.

No-one was injured in the incident, which came hours after at least six people were killed in a car bomb attack on a hotel used by members of the Governing Council.

A spokesman in Baghdad for the US-led Coalition Authority, Charles Heatley, said several people had been detained in connection with the hotel attack.

US deaths

There have been two other attacks on US-led forces in the last 24 hours, with two American soldiers dying in separate incidents in the north of the country.

In one case, a soldier was killed by a rocket-propelled grenade in the town of Tikrit.

And on Sunday night, one soldier was killed and another injured when their vehicle hit a landmine near the town of Baiji.

US-led forces are now facing an average of 20 attacks a day.

The latest deaths bring to 97 the number of American soldiers killed in action in Iraq since President Bush declared major combat over on 1 May.
