Two British backpackers accuse Israel of 'psychological torture'

Israel was accused Friday of the "psychological
torture" of two British students who were detained
and interrogated for 11 days after being stopped
as they crossed the border with Jordan during a
backpacking holiday.

One of the men, 23-year-old
Tahseen Chaudhry, a medical
student at Birmingham
University, said he was
handcuffed and blindfolded,
held in a dark seven-foot cell
and questioned for 12 hours at
a time by interrogators trying
to make him confess to links
with terrorism.

He and his travelling companion, Iyaz Ghani -
also 23 and from Birmingham - were denied
contact with British embassy officials or their
families, and were initially told they had been
kidnapped, he said.

Chaudhry told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme:
"I was arrested crossing from Israel into
Jordan. After much checking of our bags, they
said I looked suspicious and we were arrested
for questioning. That was the only reason given
at first. I was basically shackled, handcuffed
and blindfolded and put into an armoured car
and transported to an interrogation centre,
where I was put in a cell and over the next 11
days taken out in the mornings and interrogated
all day.

"These interrogation sessions were quite
intense. In the first session I was connected
to a heart-rate monitor, which I was told would
be able to detect whether I was telling lies. I
was repeatedly told I was lying when I said I
was a medical student and there for tourism. I
was interrogated for eight hours at a time,
handcuffed to a chair.

"The longest interrogation period lasted 12
hours. You are so exhausted at the
interrogation that you are falling asleep, but
the teams swap over and repeatedly wake you up
and question you about why you came to Israel
and what you were doing in other Middle Eastern
countries before you came to Israel. The cell
we were kept in was very small and dark, like a
medieval dungeon. I was put in a cell seven
feet by three feet, where the only thing you
could do was close your eyes and hope it would
be a short period you would spend there."

Chaudhry said he repeatedly asked to speak to
British consular officials, a lawyer, the Red
Cross or his family, but was denied any contact
with the outside world. His captors changed
their story over whether the British Embassy
had been informed, but when he was released and
called his family, he found they did not know
he had been in detention. His eventual release
occurred apparently because his interrogators
decided "they had nothing more to do with us",
he said.

Chaudhry's solicitor, Imran Khan, said the men's
arrest at the end of last month appeared to
have taken place purely because they were
Muslims. Other British Muslims might face the
same treatment if they visited Israel, he
warned.

The arrests came about a fortnight after two
Britons carried out a suicide bomb attack on a
Tel Aviv bar - the first such outrage in Israel
conducted by terrorists from abroad. Khan told
the BBC: "What we have found is that all
British individuals are being stopped and
checked in the situation they found themselves
in.

"What is quite concerning is that the reason for
the detention appears to be simply that he was
British and a Muslim. There is a huge number of
people who could potentially find themselves in
a similar position."

He added: "What is clear is that psychological
torture was going on, whereby they were told
contact had been made with their families and
embassy and it had not."

He said it appeared that the British Embassy had
discovered the two men were being held and
raised their case with the Israeli authorities.
But he said there were still questions over
exactly when consular officials raised the case
and whether the men's families were kept
informed of events.
