Dog, cat fur turns up in toys
By Amanda Hodge
July 10, 2003

THE skins and fur of brutally slaughtered dogs and cats are increasingly being sold as clothes and toys by Australian shops under false and misleading labels.

An 18-month investigation by the Humane Society International found dog and cat products were slipping through under a "fur other" import category.

The conservation group found that the Korean label on a child's parka bought recently in a Sydney clothing shop translated loosely as "racoon dog", but the tests showed the fur came from an Alsation dog. And a toy cat bought from another shop proved to be far more authentic than most cat-loving consumers would prefer - made from the hide of a real cat.

The society yesterday called on the federal Government to close the loophole for importation of such products and tighten product labelling regulations to clearly show species and country of origin.

About two million dogs and cats are killed in countries such as China, Korea and The Philippines each year and their skins and fur used in clothing and textile products.

The society has reported dismal conditions in dog and cat farms across Asia.
