Cancun all but over, South rejects draft
CANCUN (MEXICO): Negotiations at Cancun headed for a breakdown after developing countries like India and Brazil rejected the World Trade Organisation draft resolution, saying it failed to address their main concerns and was heavily loaded in favour of the US and European Union on the contentious issue of agriculture and what are called the Singapore issues.
The draft resolution, running into 15 pages, was issued today after four days of hectic consultations among trade ministers of 146 countries.
Discussions between trade ministers have been on all night with the developing and developed worlds sticking to their positions. There were unconfirmed reports that the conference could be extended.
The developed countries are now trying break the alliance of 22 developing countries, hoping to isolate them while applying pressure for a compromise resolution.

Het mislukken van de WTO zal veel grotere gevolgen hebben dan wij in Europa nu denken. Het zou me namelijk niets verbazen als de arme landen nu per direct hun samenwerking met het IMF en de WorldBank zullen opzeggen, hetgeen het Westen in een economische crisis van ongekende grootte zal storten.
