Spy charge for Guantanamo official
A member of the US Air Force who worked at the detention centre in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has been charged with espionage and aiding the enemy, says the Pentagon.
The man, who has not been named, is the second member of the US military at the base to be held on matters of security.
Pentagon spokesman Major Michael Shavers said that Senior Airman Ahmad al-Halabi, who is in jail at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, was charged after recently serving as an interpreter at the base.
Officials would not say whether the latest arrest was linked to that of Muslim US Army chaplain Yousef Yee, formerly known as James Lee, who worked as a spiritual adviser to the hundreds of captured al-Qaeda and Taleban suspects at the base.
Mr Yee was detained in Florida on 10 September on his return from Guantanamo Bay.
Investigations continue
Unofficial reports said the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had taken from him classified documents, as well as a map detailing the location of individual prisoners.
Mr Shavers said Mr Halabi was being detained at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California after being arrested on 23 July.
He has been charged with nine counts related to espionage, three counts of aiding the enemy, 11 counts of disobeying a lawful order, and nine counts of making a false official statement.
Pentagon officials said an investigation into possible security breaches at Guantanamo Bay continues.
