Israeli army flexes military might against stone-throwers

Israeli occupation troops have admitted to firing live ammunition at Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip because of a shortage of non-lethal weapons.

The shocking revelation is detailed in a highly critical 108-page report on the Israeli military released on Tuesday.

The state comptroller’s report found that previous recommendations had not been implemented, such as developing new kinds of non-lethal arms.

Other suggestions included buying more rubber bullets and tear gas to give soldiers an alternative to live ammunition.

A shortage of non-lethal weapons has caused potentially deadly problems, said the report. “There have been incidents in which a unit’s lack of non-lethal weapons led to the use of live ammunition instead,” it stated.

Rules of war

According to Israeli military open-fire rules, soldiers are to use live ammunition only when their lives or the lives of others are endangered, or after warning procedures have been ignored.

Israel state comptroller report

The report quoted a commander as saying that his unit often delayed missions until night because it lessened the chance of confrontation with Palestinian civilians. He claimed this was necessary due to lack of rubber bullets or tear gas.

Israeli forces launch invasions in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip almost every night. Occupation soldiers often open fire, resulting in the killing of civilians.

The occupation army claimed it allocates “considerable resources to develop non-lethal weapons or purchase” such arms but it has not yet found a “technological breakthrough in the world”.
