Taliban fighters ambush fuel trucks

The Associated Press
Suspected Taliban insurgents in Kandahar, Afghanistan, ambushed two fuel trucks supplying the U.S.-led coalition and beheaded two people, and also killed 10 government soldiers and two children in a separate clash, military officials said Thursday.
The tankers were ambushed in the Urgan district of Paktika province while ferrying fuel from the capital, Kabul, to a coalition base, Afghan army spokesman Waisudin Salek said.

The suspected militants beheaded two people and then kidnapped the remaining four, he said. He didn't give any other details.

Separately, a pickup truck carrying government soldiers came under fire from up to 16 Taliban fighters in Dara-e-Noor, about 45 miles north of Kandahar. The soldiers returned fire, killing one rebel, said Gen. Atta Mohammed, director of Afghan special forces in Kandahar.

The children of one soldier were riding in the military vehicle and were killed in the ambush, Mohammed said.

One wounded Taliban fighter was captured after the clash in the Dara-e-Noor area of southern Afghanistan late Wednesday, he said.
