Palestinian agent wounds 2 Shin Bet men in suicide bombing

By Amit Ben Arroyo, Ha'aretz Correspondent

Two Shin Bet secret service agents were injured early Wednesday when a Palestinian collaborator who worked with them blew himself up near the Israeli-Arab town of Taibeh.

The suicide bomber was Murad Abu al Asal, 22, a Fatah activist from the West Bank village of Anabta. He was killed in the blast.

The Israelis' injuries, mainly burns and cuts, were not life-threatening, hospital officials said.

"During a Shin Bet operation...a suicide terrorist blew himself up near the Shin Bet force. As a result, the terrorist was killed and two Shin Bet agents were lightly wounded," the Prime Minister's Office said in a statment.

Witnesses said the explosion set afire the Israelis' Volkswagen van near a bridge on the road between the Arab villages of Taibeh and Tira.

The towns are located close to the 1967 Green Line border. The Kfar Sava area has been the scene of a number of attacks in recent months.

An official from Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction said the bomber had worked for Israeli intelligence but had turned on his handlers to carry out his "national duty."

Israeli intelligence personnel have been on alert for possible attacks by Palestinian double agents since June 2001, when a senior military intelligence officer, Lieutenant Colonel Yehuda Edri, was killed by a Palestinian who worked as an informer for the IDF. Edri was killed near the Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo, at a meeting arranged by the IDF officer and agent Hassan Abu-Saira. Abu-Saira shot Edri at close range. Two soldiers accompanying the officer then shot the agent.

Israel Radio quoted unnamed Palestinian sources as calling the attack "a well-timed, well-coordinated attack against Israeli security forces personnel."

The Palestinians saw the attack as "very prestigious, a very high-quality attack against Israeli security forces," the radio said. "They certainly view this as a success in their ability to strike at the 'special forces' of Israel's security forces."
