Rift grows between Iraq's interim council and US led coalition

A rift is growing between Iraq's interim government and the United States-led coalition over the deployment of Turkish troops to Iraq.

Meetings with US overseer, Paul Bremer, and the Turkish ambassador to Iraq have not resulted in any compromise, with the Americans even preventing the release of a council statement denouncing the Turkish deployment.

Council member Ahmad Chalabi says strategically any foreign troop should be invited by a sovereign Iraqi government, in this case the Iraqi Governing Council.

But the council, which was assembled by the Americans and is subject to a veto by Mr Bremer, has no real power to block the arrival of Turkish troops.

The squabble over Turkish troops is only the latest row between the Americans and the council since the body was inaugurated on July 13.

Last week most council members bitterly opposed the US decision to send Iraqi police recruits to Jordan for training, pointing to Amman's close ties to fallen Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Council members have also complained about the coalition's awarding of reconstruction contracts independent of the fledgling Iraqi lawmaking body.
