Taliban, Al-Qaida Activities On The Rise In Afghanistan: ISAF
Oct 22, 2003
Source: Hi Pakistan

Kabul has been infiltrated by terrorists, fighting has intensified while Taliban and al-Qaeda activities is on the rise.

The head of NATO-led peacekeepers German General Gotz Gliemeroth painted this bleak picture of security across Afghanistan at the monthly press briefing in Kabul on Tuesday. General Gotz Gliemeroth warned: "No doubt there are clear indications of an increase in terrorist threats both in Kabul and other regions of Afghanistan, there are also indications that a number of terrorists have infiltrated Kabul ahead of the holy month of Ramazan."

The general said, "Additionally, fighting in the south and the southeast has intensified, and infiltration by al-Qaeda, Taliban and other terrorist groups is becoming an increasing problem for peacekeepers."

Attacks on aid workers and security forces by resurgent Taliban killed 300 people since August, Gliemeroth said adding that 5,300-strong International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and the 12,500-strong US-dominated military coalition had taken "significant steps" to counter the rising terrorist threats.

General Gliemeroth further said that the ISAF would also assist the Afghan the efforts of authorities in providing security for the upcoming Loya Jirga, which would meet in December to approve the new constitution of the country.

On the evening of the 24th of September 2001, An armed group from the Brigades of the Islamic Resistance have attacked the Baath Party's Al Aqeedah Centre in the Al Amanah District of the capital, Baghdad. When they reported the attack, sources in the SCIRI Information Centre said that the Islamic Resistance used hand grenades and automatic weapons in their attack. This resulted in the deaths of two Baath Party members, one of the latter being the hireling, Kamil Ali Shamil, a member of the Baath Party branch, and in the serious wounding of four more Baathis, who were evacuated to hospital. Our informants added that the attack inflicted serious damage on the building of the Centre attacked, so that its windows had disintegrated as a result of the heavy fire and the explosions of the hand grenades. Thereafter the regime's Security Forces organised an extensive search operation, encompassing many houses standing close to the Centre targeted, in an attempt to unearth the attackers. But the latter had left the scene of the incident after completing their heroic operation without suffering any losses.
