WASHINGTON (Sapa-DPA) -- Eighteen students have died in and around United States schools since the new school year began in late August - more than in either of the previous two years, USA Today newspaper reported on Tuesday.

In 50 other shootings and fistfights, there were no fatalities.

In the entire 2002-2003 school year, 16 students were killed, and the year before, 17 were killed.

In 1999-2000, 31 students were killed in school-related violence, including 15 who died in the massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado.

Young people, however, were still safer in school than out of school, according to federal crime statistics.

About 5,700 in every 10,000 students between 12 to 18 years of age reported they were crime victims in 2001. Five students in 100,000 were affected by serious violent crime in or near schools in the year 2000, up from 1 offence in 1992, USA Today said.
