China Floods - 123 Dead,
200,000 Homes Destroyed
10-29-3

BEIJING (AFP) -- More than 200,000 homes have collapsed and another 530,000 are damaged after pounding rain in China's Shaanxi province, where 123 have died or gone missing since August, reports and officials said Tuesday.

Most of the homes destroyed were cave dwellings close to hills and mountainsides.

"So far, more than 200,000 cave dwellings have collapsed this month," an official surnamed Wang from the disaster relief department of the Shaanxi Civil Affairs Bureau told AFP, adding that another 530,000 had been damaged.

"Since October 1 the bad weather has continued. The cave-ins have happened since then. Many people were buried alive. 23 people were killed," he said.

The weather has improved in recent days but Wang warned more destruction was possible.

"It's hard to say whether there will be more collapses," he said.

"Many people have been evacuated from their homes. Some are in temporary shelters, some in tents, some have gone to relatives houses."

The worst affected cities and counties were listed by the China Daily as Baoji, Weinan, Xianyang, Tongchuan and Chengcheng in the Wei River valley where floods and torrential rain have caused havoc since August.

The newspaper said 123 people were dead or missing in Shaanxi since then, although this could not be confirmed.

The Wei River has experienced its worst flooding in 20 years this year, inundating more than 200 square kilometres (80 square miles) of land, forcing the evacuation of 300,000 people, the paper said.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs has allocated 60 million yuan (7.3 million for relief to help the Shaanxi victims get through the winter.

Severe rain and floods have blighted large parts of China this year, leaving millions of people homeless. The government said recently the wild weather had claimed 1,911 lives so far.
