Two CIA staff killed in Afghanistan
Washington, Oct 29 - Two US nationals working under contract with the Central Intelligence Agency were killed over the weekend in an ambush in Afghanistan while tracking terrorists near the border with Pakistan, the agency said Tuesday.
In a rare public acknowledgement, the CIA identified the two as William Carlson and Christopher Glenn Mueller, civilian contractors assigned to the agency's directorate of operations.
They were killed during an ambush near Shkin, Afghanistan October 25, the CIA said, adding that they "died while tracking terrorists in the region."
A CIA spokesman would provide no other details on the circumstances surrounding their death.
Shkin is located on the Pakistani border in the southeastern Afghan province of Paktika, which local authorities said was the scene of fierce fighting over the weekend following an attack Saturday on US forces.
"The circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths of these two individuals were such that CIA determined that their names could be released publicly without compromising ongoing operations or any current intelligence activities," the agency said.
It said the decision to release their names was made after consulting their families.
