sinds vier dagen terug zijn er zoveel aanvallen op amerikaanse soldaten in Iraq, en zoveel doden, dat er teveel nieuws berichten zijn om ze allemaal hier te plaatsen elke dag.

Two CIA staff killed in Afghanistan

Washington, Oct 29 - Two US nationals working under contract with the Central Intelligence Agency were killed over the weekend in an ambush in Afghanistan while tracking terrorists near the border with Pakistan, the agency said Tuesday.

In a rare public acknowledgement, the CIA identified the two as William Carlson and Christopher Glenn Mueller, civilian contractors assigned to the agency's directorate of operations.

They were killed during an ambush near Shkin, Afghanistan October 25, the CIA said, adding that they "died while tracking terrorists in the region."

A CIA spokesman would provide no other details on the circumstances surrounding their death.

Shkin is located on the Pakistani border in the southeastern Afghan province of Paktika, which local authorities said was the scene of fierce fighting over the weekend following an attack Saturday on US forces.

"The circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths of these two individuals were such that CIA determined that their names could be released publicly without compromising ongoing operations or any current intelligence activities," the agency said.

It said the decision to release their names was made after consulting their families.

7 Ukrainian soldiers wounded in Iraq

04:12:18 È.Ù
Kiev, Oct 29 - Seven Ukrainian soldiers on patrol in Iraq were wounded when guerillas attacked their convoy, the Ukrainian defence ministry confirmed Wednesday.

Two BTR-80 armoured personnel carriers carrying 14 soldiers were attacked on their way to As-suwayrah, a town south east of Baghdad, when guerillas detonated a homemade explosive before opening fire with four rocket-propelled grenade launchers and an automatic weapon, the defence ministry statement said.

Reinforcements travelled to the ambush site shortly after the attack, but were unable to apprehend any insurgents.

Two soldiers received treatment for minor wounds on site, while five seriously injured were evacuated by helicopter to hospital. They were reported to be in stable condition in a military hospital in Baghdad and are expected to return to duty next week.

It was the first serious attack on Ukrainian occupation troops, said Konstantin Hivrenko, defence ministry spokesman.

Some 1,650 Ukrainian soldiers have been stationed in Iraq under Polish command since mid-September as Kiev's contribution to an international occupation force.
