Spanish NGOs Denounce Racist Aggressions against Spain-Settled Moroccans
MADRID, Nov.08 - Several NGOs "strongly" denounced the latest racist aggressions against Moroccan expatriates settled in El Ejido, Andalusia (southeast).
"Almeria Acoge" which defends immigrants' rights said 10 to 14 immigrants of Maghreban origin have been assaulted during the last six weeks.
The Association of Progressist Women said over 20 people were victim of fascist groups.
The Union of Farm Workers (SOC), on its part, condemned in a communiqué the fascist acts against Maghreban immigrants saying it will seize the Almeria under-delegate of government on the issue, while local authorities insisted that all aggressions be reported to the police so their authors be identified and sued.
The Moroccan embassy in Madrid also "drew the Spanish foreign department's attention" on the harms Moroccans sustain at the hands of racists and called Spanish authorities to take the necessary measures to guarantee their safety.
Back in February 2000, racist groups had terrorized the Moroccan community in El Ejido when shops owned by Moroccans were burnt and looted.
