Palestinians: 3 Jenin residents wounded in IDF operation

By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent, and Haaretz Service

Palestinian sources reported Thursday that three residents of the West Bank city of Jenin were wounded in a military operation there, Israel Radio reported.

Israel Defense Forces troops were conducting a search for militants in Jenin and imposed a curfew on the refugee camp there Thursday morning, according to the report.

A Tanzim activist was wounded by IDF gunfire in Jenin when

he tried to escape from a house that Palestinian gunmen were using as a base for firing at troops, the radio reported.

Troops also imposed and then lifted a closure on the West Bank city of Qalqilyah on Thursday, where they discovered a LAU missile and a machine gun, Israel Radio reported. Troops safely detonated the missile.

IDF: 3 Palestinians killed Wednesday were not armed The IDF said Thursday morning that three Palestinians who were killed Wednesday night by military fire in the southern Gaza Strip were not armed, as had been originally reported.

Troops fired at a vehicle they thought contained armed militants they had been chasing, but an initial investigation revealed that the occupants of the vehicle were not armed. The IDF said two of the Palestinians killed were Islamic Jihad members.

It remains unclear whether there is any connection between the unarmed Palestinians who were killed and the armed Palestinians being chased.

Around 9 P.M. Wednesday, troops spotted two armed men crawling near the road linking the Kissufim crossing with the Gush Katif settlement area. IDF troops began chasing the two men, who were joined by another two Palestinians - one of them armed - who entered a house on the road.

A reservist paratroopers unit called to the house opened fire on a vehicle spotted fleeing the area, killing the three occupants of the vehicle.

Relatives of the men killed said the three cousins were shot as they drove to celebrations for the Muslim Id al-Fitr holiday in the central Gaza Strip.

Earlier Wednesday, Palestinian sources reported that nine-year-old Palestinian boy Hani Raba'iyah was shot dead by IDF troops near the Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip.

The IDF said its troops did not open fire any time on Wednesday afternoon when the boy was reported to have been shot, but Palestinians said the boy was killed when troops directed gunfire at targets adjacent to the Rafah camp on the Egyptian border.
