U.S. Forces Kill 46 Iraqis Trying to Ambush Them
Sun November 30, 2003 03:56 PM ET

TIKRIT, Iraq (Reuters) - U.S. soldiers killed 46 Iraqis and captured eight in a series of attempted ambushes on U.S. convoys in the central Iraqi city of Samarra on Sunday, a U.S. military spokesman said.
"The fourth infantry division repelled multiple ambush attacks," Lieutenant Colonel William MacDonald told reporters.

At least 18 attackers, five U.S. soldiers and a civilian traveling with the troops were wounded during the ambushes.

"The attacks were coordinated in locations very close to each other," he said, adding that the ambushes were made on separate U.S. convoys using mortars, grenades and small arms fire. Three buildings, from whose roofs the attackers fired, were destroyed.

Some of the attackers wore the attire of Fedayeen, a militia formed by Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein before U.S.-led forces toppled him earlier this year.

The Fedayeen are among the former regime loyalists whom Washington has said are coordinating a rising insurgency against the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

"This is the largest (ambush) for our task force since we've been in the area," MacDonald said.

He declined to say whether the coordinated ambushes were linked to attacks on civilian foreign nationals in the Tikrit-Samarra area in the last two days.

Samarra and Tikrit, where the 4th infantry division is based, are located in the center of Iraq where most attacks on foreign forces and Iraqis cooperating with them have been concentrated. (Reporting by Andrew Hammond, editing by Lisa Vaughan)

46 Iraqi people massacred in Samara

08:47:31 Þ.Ù
Samarra, Iraq, Dec 1 - The US military went on shooting spree, killing 46 Iraqi people, when their convoys came under ambush several times as they passed through the Iraqi town of Samarra, while residents said return fire by US troops also killed innocent bystanders.

A spokesman for the 4th infantry division which patrols Samarra, described the bloodbath as the biggest attack on the division in Iraq to date.

But workers at a nearby state-owned pharmaceutical plant said at least two colleagues were killed and many wounded as they walked out of the factory gates at the end of their shift and a US tank opened fire in all directions.

A correspondent saw blood spattered on the ground and bullet holes in the sentry box to left of the white factory gates.

Volgens veel getuigen waren er geen militairen gedood. Het waren allemaal burgers. Ook de iraakse politie zegt dit.

Death toll rises from Iraq ambush

The number of Iraqis killed by US forces in the central city of Samarra has risen to 54, the US military says. It initially reported 46 dead and 18 wounded in the fighting that raged as militants attacked convoys on Sunday. Witnesses said eight of the dead were civilians - caught in the worst battle involving US troops since major combat operations were declared over on 1 May.
South Korea and Spain have both said their troops will remain in Iraq, despite losses in weekend ambushes.
US spokesman Lieutenant Colonel William MacDonald said that US forces had fought back with tank fire when they were attacked three times by militants wearing uniforms of the pro-Saddam Fedayeen fighters. American forces destroyed three buildings being used by insurgents, he said. "We're sending a clear message that anyone who attempts to attack our convoys will pay the price," the spokesman said. Samarra is within the so-called "Sunni triangle" north of Baghdad - the heartland of Saddam Hussein loyalists.

'Rooftops and alleys'

Two logistical convoys were moving into Samarra when they came under attack from roadside bombs, small arms, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades, Colonel MacDonald said. The attacks - one on the east side of the city, the other on the west - were simultaneous and appeared to be co-ordinated. In one of the ambushes, militants had barricaded off the road and opened fire from rooftop positions and out of alleyways.
About an hour after the initial ambushes, four militants in a car attacked another US convoy in Samarra. All four were wounded and captured in the clash and Kalashnikov rifles recovered from the black BMW. None of the US soldiers was seriously hurt, the US spokesman said. "This is the largest [ambush] for our task force since we've been in the area," Colonel MacDonald added.
Frightened witnesses in Samarra told a correspondent for the French news agency AFP who managed to enter the city that US forces had repeatedly come under attack on Sunday. However, they added that, in the aftermath of one attack at about 1255 (0955 GMT), an American tank had opened fire on workers leaving a factory at the end of their shift, killing two and wounding "many". Iraqi doctors said eight civilians were killed by US fire in the exchanges, reported AFP.
The BBC's Peter Greste, also in Samarra, says there is an unmistakeable sense of anger among local people - who say the US response to the attacks was indiscriminate and unnecessary.

Bloody weekend

South Korea, Spain and Japan have all vowed not to surrender to "terrorism" after weekend attacks on their citizens in Iraq. Seven Spanish intelligence agents were killed in an ambush on Saturday and two Japanese diplomats died in a separate attack. The attack on the Spanish agents caused particular revulsion in Spain where images of Iraqis celebrating at the site of the killings were shown widely. Two South Korean workers and a Colombian contractor were also killed in separate attacks and two US soldiers died in an attack near the Syrian border.

SAMARRA: At least eight Iraqi civilians were killed and more than 60 wounded by US fire in bloody clashes with insurgents in the Iraqi town of Samarra, local hospital director Abed Tawfiq told a foreign news agency on Monday.

US commanders previously said they killed 46 Iraqi insurgents in the clashes. Accident and emergency department anaesthetist Bassem Ibrahim said we received the bodies of eight civilians, including a woman and a child.

Tawfiq said more than 60 people wounded by gunfire and shrapnel from US rounds are being treated at the hospital. He said there were so many casualties from US fire during their intense clashes with insurgents who ambushed American convoys in the town Sunday afternoon and evening that they had had to be treated in the hospital's corridors.

US Retailiates For Multiple Weekend Attacks That Killed 15
Dec 01, 2003
Source: AP

U.S. forces repulsed two coordinated attacks by insurgents in Samarra, killing 54 Iraqis in the bloodiest combat reported since the end of the war that ousted Saddam Hussein's regime, the military said Monday.

But local residents said troops fired randomly at townspeople, and that most of those who died were civilians caught up in the clash.

The scale of the attacks and their apparent coordination indicated that rebel units retain the ability to conduct synchronized operations despite a massive U.S. offensive this month aimed at crushing the insurgency.

A U.S. military spokesman said the clash was initiated by attackers, many wearing uniforms of Saddam's Fedayeen paramilitary force, who simultaneously attacked two U.S. convoys at opposite sides of Samarra, a town 60 miles north of Baghdad.

The scars of the battle were evident on Monday. About a dozen cars lay destroyed in the streets, many apparently crushed by tanks, and bullet holes pocked many buildings. A rowdy crowd gathered at one spot, chanting pro-Saddam slogans. One man fired warning shots in the air when journalists arrived at the scene.

Many residents said Saddam loyalists attacked the Americans, but that when U.S. forces began firing at random, many civilians got their guns and joined the fight. Many said residents were bitter about recent U.S. raids in the night.

"Why do they arrest people when they're in their homes?" asked Athir Abdul Salam, a 19-year-old student. "They come at night to arrest people. So what do they expect those people to do?"

"Civilians shot back at the Americans," said 30-year-old Ali Hassan, who was wounded by shrapnel in the battle. "They claim we are terrorists. So OK, we are terrorists. What do they expect when they drive among us?"

Many residents said the Americans opened fire at random when they came under attack, and targeted civilian installations. Six destroyed vehicles sat in front of the hospital, where witnesses said U.S. tanks shelled people dropping off the injured. A kindergarten was damaged, apparently by tank shells. No children were hurt.

"Luckily we evacuated the children five minutes before we came under attack," said Ibrahim Jassim, a 40-year-old guard at the kindergarten. "Why did they attack randomly? Why did they shoot a kindergarten with tank shells?"

Lt. Col. William MacDonald of the 4th Infantry Division said that after barricading a road, the attackers opened fire from rooftops and alleyways with bombs, small arms, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. U.S. troops responded with 120mm tank rounds and 25mm cannon fire from Bradley fighting vehicles.

U.S. fire destroyed three buildings the attackers were using, MacDonald said.

"It sounds like the attack had some coordination to it, but the soldiers responded, used their firepower, used tank and Bradley fire and other weapons available to them, to stop this attack and take the fight to the enemy," he said.

MacDonald said the attack was the largest faced by his Task Force Ironhorse, whose mission includes the hunt for Saddam. Military officials in Baghdad said they haven't reported a deadlier attack since May 1, when President Bush declared major combat over. U.S. officials have only sporadically released figures on Iraqi casualties, and wouldn't say whether there has been a deadlier firefight that went unreported.

In Sunday's firefight in Samarra, the U.S. military initially said 46 Iraqi fighters died and five American soldiers were wounded. But a statement on Monday raised the number of Iraqi dead to 54. Residents of Samarra disputed those figures, saying at most eight or nine people died. Three bodies lay in the hospital morgue. There was no way to reconcile the accounts.

Shortly after the firefight, four men in a BMW attacked another U.S. convoy in Samarra with automatic rifles, MacDonald said. The soldiers wounded all four men, and found Kalashnikov rifles and grenade launchers in their car.
