Khatami: Iran experiencing religious democracy

Tehran, Dec 30, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami here Tuesday
said Iran is experiencing a democratic system based on religion.
In a message to the first International Seminar on Religious
Democracy, which was read by presidential advisor Hadi Khaniki, the
president said Iran should materialize its new pattern by taking
lessons from world history and other countries` experiences.
Religion is the source of historical identity and culture of
the Iranian nation, President Khatami said, adding that sufficient
attention should be paid to Islamic principles in order to
materialize democracy and freedom in the country.
A group of domestic and foreign scholars and thinkers are
attending the two-day seminar.
The seminar secretariat received 90 articles, 45 of whim have
been selected to be reviewed by the participants in the seminar
on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In Iran ligt de wetgevende macht nu toch bij de geestelijkheid? Of toch niet?

Ik wil niet brutaal zijn, maar is de 'historical identity and culture of
the Iranian nation' niet al een paar duizend jaar ouder dan de 'religion'?

In Turkije is in de 19e eeuw al geprobeerd het sociaal contract van Rousseau te verenigen met de, hoe heet dat, bi`a, de overeenkomst tussen Allah en de umma, maar dat lukte niet zo. In een democratie kunnen mensen van alles nastreven, in een religie zijn de mogelijkheden beperkt. Maar goed, Khatemi kan niet vrijuit spreken.

Maar moet hij niet naar Bam? Of is de timing gunstig voor zo'n congres, denkt hij? Ik hoor dat het Belgische reddingsteam 2 volle dagen heeft verloren (ze arriveerden zaterdagnacht) doordat ze zaten te wachten tot iemand definitief over de tegenstrijdige opdrachten van de Iraanse overheid besliste. Daarna zijn ze maar op eigen houtje in actie gekomen.
