Iran asks Egypt to restore ties
Iran has asked Egypt to restore full diplomatic relations, the Iranian foreign ministry has said. "Relations with Egypt must now be restored because this will help the Palestinian people," said a spokesman.
Tehran severed ties with Cairo in 1980 in protest at Egypt's peace treaty with Israel signed two years earlier. The latest move came after Tehran agreed to rename a street bearing the name of the man who assassinated former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.
