Khatami calls for Iran-Morocco cooperation

Tehran, Feb 22, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami here Sunday
stressed the need for unity among Muslims in light of international
developments and called for greater cooperation based on mutual
respect.
Khatami made the remark at a meeting with Morocco`s newly
appointed Ambassador to Iran Abdolaziz Banis who submitted his
credentials to the president.
Pointing to the two countries` role in the expansion of Islamic
civilization, the president pointed to Morocco as a gateway for the
spread of such civilization to the West.
He stressed the need to revive Islamic glory and dignity by
capitalizing on Islam`s religious and intellectual resources and
updating them with the demands of the time, responding to new ideas
and making use of the achievements of the world`s peoples.
Khatami said bilateral cooperation between Iran and Morocco
would be in their mutual interest as well as that of the Islamic
world.
Islamic states can achieve major power through support for
each other, said the president, adding their power would not be used
for expansionism but would be used to achieve progress as well as
eliminate cruelty and suppression.
Banis, for his part, pointed to the mutual bond existing between
Morocco and the Islamic Republic of Iran and voiced his country`s
determination to boost mutual relations.
