Electioneering has began in earnest
An election candidate has been killed in Sri Lanka ahead of general elections due in April, police say.
Gunmen attacked Sinnathamby Sunderapillai, a minority Tamil candidate, in a hospital in Batticaloa where he was being treated for injuries suffered during an earlier attack.
Mr Sunderapillai was a candidate from Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe's party in Batticaloa.
This is the first political killing in the run-up to the election which has been marked by a series of violent incidents.
No group has said it carried out the attack, which comes two days after Amnesty International asked Tamil Tiger rebels to let opposing ethnic Tamil politicians campaign freely.
The rebels marked the opening of the campaign by warning of "serious consequences" if their supporters were obstructed from voting.

Waarschijnlijk gedood door supporters van de President van het land. De Presidente Kumaratunga is zeer anti-Tamil mede omdat er in 2000 een zelfmoordaanslag op haar gepleegd is door de Tamils.
