Palestinians call for restraint

A group of prominent Palestinians has urged people in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to refrain from using violence to try to end Israel's occupation. The appeal was made in a half-page ad in the Palestinian al-Ayyam newspaper. It denounced Israel's killing of the Hamas spiritual leader - which has sparked calls for revenge - but advocated "a peaceful, wise intifada".

The 70 signatories include former Palestinian minister Yasser Abed Rabbo and legislator Hanan Ashrawi. The appeal condemns "the blatant aggression launched by Israel against our people... which resulted in the martyrdom of the leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and his struggling comrades". But despite this, the signatories call on Palestinians to "repress their rage and rise once again in a widespread popular intifada, that is based on clear goals and constructive rhetoric". Such an uprising, the appeal says, would deny Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon "the opportunity to continue unleashing his assault against our people". The signatories also included two senior figures from Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement - Abbas Zaki and Sari Nuseibeh.

The killing of Sheikh Yassin by a targeted Israeli missile strike on Monday sparked grief and outrage across Palestinian areas. Hamas has vowed to avenge his death by killing Israeli leaders.
