Sura-e-Tauba to be Removed From Textbooks

ISLAMABAD: The Curriculum Review Committee has decided to remove Sura-e-Tauba from the textbooks because, according to its members, the Sura was too lengthy for the students to learn by heart.
Two members of the National Assembly (MNAs) belonging to Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, Dr Attaur Rehman and Maulana Inayatur Rehman, and Maulana Hanif Jallundhri of Rabata-ul-Madaris were part of the committee.
The decision was reported by Education Federal Minister Zobaida Jalal while chairing a Curriculum Review Committee meeting held here on Friday.
Four provincial education ministers and education secretaries, federal education secretary and representatives from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Federally Administrated Tribal Areas and Northern Areas attended the meeting. She said that as a sensitive issue, she thought that the matter best decided by the committee, with ulema as members.
The federal minister also directed all provincial education ministers to recheck the entire syllabus and point out any objectionable material and inform the Education Ministry. The education minister briefed the meeting about the objectives of the national curriculum, which would include the Quranic principles and practices.
Balochistan Education Minister Maulana Abdul Wahid termed the syllabus outdated, saying that new concepts should be included in the curriculum. He said that verses on jihad were not deleted, rather were shifted from the Inter level to matric level. —Staff Report
