PARIJS (ANP) - De regering van Frankrijk verwacht dat het tekort op de begroting zowel dit jaar als in 2005 zal uitkomen boven de officiële ramingen. Dat heeft de krant Le Monde maandag gemeld op basis van vertrouwelijke cijfers. Een regeringswoordvoerder weigerde te reageren op het bericht.
Afgelopen zaterdag zei de nieuwe minister van Financiën, Nicolas Sarkozy, op een bijeenkomst met zijn collega's van de Europese Unie nog steeds te hopen dat het tekort volgend jaar wordt beperkt tot minder dan 3 procent van het bruto binnenlands product. Dat is het maximum voor landen die de euro hebben.
Maar volgens Le Monde blijkt uit geheime cijfers dat het 4 procent wordt. In 2004 zou het tekort net als vorig jaar uitkomen op 4,1 procent, aanzienlijk meer dan de raming van 3,6 procent die de regering heeft ingediend bij de Europese Commissie.

2004 flame went out ‘fewer than 30 times’
Irked by press criticism over the performance of the designer torches used to carry the Olympic Flame around Greece. the Athens 2004, the organizing committee, issued a statement yesterday to Insist that the olive leaf-shaped devices usually stay lit.
Torches went out during both high-profile events invoWing the Olympic Flame— the March25 lighting ceremony in Olympia and the arrival of the flame at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens on Wednesday.
On the latter occasion, the wind blew out the torch as Athens 2004 PresIdent Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki took charge of it. Backup flames were used in both cases.
Athens 2004 said that in most cases, the gas flame went out “because the bearers had not been fully familiarized [with the torches].” It argued that out of the 823 torch-bearers, “fewer than 30” needed a relight

Wat bedoel je? Het Griekse leger is in het geheim aan het experimenteren met nieuwe vlammenwerpers om Turks-Cyprioten uit te roken, maar helaas waaien ze steeds uit? Tip: volgens mij brandt Retsina als een lier.

Retsina smelt, ouzo brandt daartegen als een lier. Maar ik heb eerder behoefte aan een groot glas met al het alcohol er nog in na het lezen van dit stuk. Vooral op het laatste citaat zal ik lekker slapen :brozac:

Greek Cypriots are not pleased with the deal
Turkey has warned Greek Cypriots that if they reject a UN plan to reunite Cyprus it will seek international recognition for the Turkish north.
Greek and Turkish Cypriots will hold twin referenda on the plan on 24 April.
Both sides need to vote 'yes' for the proposals, drawn up by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, to proceed.
However, latest opinion polls suggest that while Turkish Cypriots approve of deal, their counterparts in the Greek controlled south will not back it.
The reunification plan is unpopular with some Greek Cypriots because it limits how many of them can return to homes in the north and allows some Turkish troops to remain.
Out in the cold
Turkey's Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul gave Ankara's warning of the possible consequences of a 'no' vote in an interview with the daily newspaper Hurriyet.
"If Greek Cypriots vote 'no' and Turkish Cypriots vote 'yes', I shall seek recognition for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," Mr Gul said.
"I shall proudly travel the planet advocating recognition of the TRNC," he added.
The Turkish north has been internationally isolated since 1974 when Turkish troops seized it following a Greek Cypriot coup.
Nine years after the coup, in 1983, the self-declared TRNC was set up, but decades on it is still only Turkey which recognises the breakaway territory.
If either community rejects the UN reunification blueprint only the Greek Cypriot south will be admitted to the European Union on 1 May.
Violence fears
The plan envisages a federation of two states - one Greek and the other Turkish - with a loose central government, on the Swiss model.
It allows fewer refugees to return to the Turkish north and specifies that Turkey will be allowed to maintain a military presence on the island indefinitely.
While many on the Turkish side have embraced the deal, veteran Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash - who boycotted the talks in Switzerland - said he would campaign for a no vote.
He claims that instead of healing 30 years of division the proposals are likely to spark the kind of inter-communal violence last seen in the 1960s.
"We have seen Kosovo and Palestine for years. They say 'We have solved it' and then it's a bloodbath," Mr Denktash said.

Denktasj is de Ian Paisley van Cyprus. Hij voelt zijn einde naderen en niemand luistert meer naar hem. Come to think of it, hij doet me wel aan Theo van Gogh denken.
