KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, Serbia and Montenegero, April 17 (Reuters) - Shooting has broken out at a prison in the northern Kosovo town of Mitrovica with a female U.S. police officer left lying motionless on the ground, a Reuters witness has said.

United Nations sources in the U.N. administered province said there were reports that a Moroccan police officer or prison security guard had opened fire on Saturday and that at least one American had been killed.

Another report said it was a Pakistani policeman or prison guard who had opened fire.

Other reports said there were two dead and several injured.

The deputy director at the health centre in Mitrovica, Milan Ivanovic, told reporters six U.N. police officers had been wounded, and five were in very serious condition.

"One international American policewoman is in a very critical condition," he added.

The Reuters witness said no ambulances stopped to pick the body of a the second U.S. policewoman which was covered with a coat.

He saw American members of the United Nations police force moving cautiously into the grounds of the district prison and cafeteria as ambulances and senior officers rushed to the scene.

Doden bij ruzie VN'ers in Kosovo

MITROVICA Bij een schietpartij tussen
politiemensen van de VN in Kosovo zijn
twee Amerikanen en een Jordaniër om het
leven gekomen.Ook raakten zeker zeven
veiligheidsmensen gewond.De betrokkenen
werkten als cipier in een gevangenis in
Mitrovica.

De schietpartij zou zijn ontstaan uit
een ruzie over Irak tussen Amerikaanse
vrouwelijke VN-medewerkers en enkele
collega's uit Jordanië.Vier Jordaniërs
zijn gearresteerd.

De situatie in het gebied is gespannen.
In maart vielen in Kosovo tientallen
doden bij rellen tussen Albanezen en
Serviërs.

Erg merkwaardig. Ik ben benieuwd waar die ruzie over ging tussen Jordaniers en Amerikanen. Er is genoeg om ruzie over te maken, al was het maar omdat de Amerikanen het netwerk van Osama Bin Laden in Kosovo financieel en logistiek ondersteunt.

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, Serbia and Montenegro (Reuters) - Two Americans and a Jordanian were killed on Saturday when violent emotions over Iraq boiled over into a shootout between members of the U.N. law enforcement mission in Kosovo.

U.N. police spokesman Neeraj Singh said three police officers -- two American and one Jordanian -- were killed and 11 others wounded.

Unconfirmed reports spoke of up to five dead and 14 wounded in a 10-minute exchange of fire at the U.N. compound in the ethnically divided city of Mitrovica -- usually the scene of peace-making interventions by U.N. police and NATO troops.

The deputy head of the Serb hospital in Mitrovica, Milan Ivanovic, said one of the dead was an American woman, hit along with four female U.S. colleagues.

U.N. police sources said four Jordanian police officers had been arrested in connection with the shooting, but could give no further details on the cause. Other police sources said it began with a row over Iraq followed by gunfire.
