Iranian WMD victims sue US govt

Tehran, May 5 - Society of Victims of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) on Tuesday lodged complaint with Swiss embassy in Tehran against US administration for supplying Saddam Hussein of Iraq with unconventional arms to be used against Iranian soldiers in the course of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran (1988).
In a letter to Swiss Ambassador to Iran, the society said that the US government and American companies should bear responsibility for supplying unconventional weapons to Saddam Hussein of Iraq and the political support they provided to encourage his inv asion of Iran.
"Iraqi regime had been placed in the US state department black list of the states supporting terrorism since 1967 for its alliance with the former Soviet Union, but, Washington dropped it from the black list as soon as Iraq invaded Iran and all the restr ictions against Iraq were lifted then (1980)," the society said.
"During 1980-1990, when the US lifted the ban on export of military components to Iraq, the US government issued over 780 licenses allowing the American companies to export sensitive weapons components to Iraq," it said.
The society cited a report from the US Department for Commerce which indicated that Washington supplied Iraq with air force components within 1985-1990.
The society said that victims of Iraqi-imposed war will take legal action through domestic court and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague to seek compensation for Washington's logistical support of Saddam Hussein in 1980s.
