Athene steunt Turks EU-lidmaatschap

Griekenland heeft vrijdag na afloop van een ontmoeting in Athene tussen de Griekse premier Kostas Karamanlis en zijn Turkse ambtgenoot Recep Tayyip Erdogan zijn steun uitgesproken voor de toetreding van Turkije tot de Europese Unie.

Het is voor het eerst in zestien jaar dat een Turkse premier een bezoek brengt aan de voormalige aartsvijand Griekenland. Turkije hoopt eind dit jaar van de EU te horen te krijgen dat de politieke en sociaal-economische hervormingen in het land voldoende gevorderd zijn om de onderhandelingen over toetreding te beginnen. Verscheidene Europese landen zijn vooralsnog tegen een Turks lidmaatschap van de EU. Karamanlis en Erdogan spraken ook over Cyprus. Volgens Griekenland is de kwestie Cyprus opgelost, ondanks de afwijzing door de Grieks-Cyprioten van de hereniging met het door Turkije bezette Noorden van het eiland in een vorige maand gehouden referendum. Karamanlis stelt dat heel Cyprus op 1 mei is toegetreden tot de EU, maar dat het Turkse Noorden een speciale status heeft.

Erdogan bedankte Griekenland voor de steun voor de Turkse toetreding tot de EU en zei dat in beide landen 'een sterke politieke wil' aanwezig is om de problemen die er zijn op te lossen. 'We moeten naar de toekomst kijken en het verleden laten rusten.' Griekenland en Turkije hadden jarenlang een scherp conflict over de grens tussen beide landen in de Egeïsche Zee en de bezetting door Turkije van Noord-Cyprus. Het Europees Parlement uitte begin deze maand forse kritiek op de hervormingen die Turkije aan het doorvoeren is. Volgens het europarlement kan Turkije pas lid worden van de EU als het een nieuwe grondwet aanneemt waarin westerse democratische waarden een centrale rol spelen. Ook de Europese Commissie sprak zich in haar laatste analyse negatief uit over de Turkse hervormingen.

Dit bezoek was veel historischer dan hier vermeld. Voor het eerst bezocht een Turkse PM Tracië!

Hoewel ik die opmerking van Karamanlis over dat heel Cyprus lid van de EU is geworden ook wel sterk vind. Wat zullen ze in Brussel wit weggetrokken zijn. :nerveus:


Erdogan visits W. Thrace
Careful not to tread on toes, he urges Muslims to work for strong Greece

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan ended his three-day groundbrealdng visit to Greece on Saturday with a private visit to the northeastern border town of Komotini, where he met with members of Greece’s Muslim minority. Although the visit was fraught with political risk for the Greek government — as Athens rejects the demand by many members of the minority to call the minority Turkish — Erdogan pulled off the visit with great diplomatic tact. “I believe wholeheartedly that a strong Greece will provide you with greater benefits,” he told minority members.

At 10.10 p.m. he left Kavala airport for Istanbul. “My visit to Greece contributed to the development of friendship and peace between the two countries,” Erdogan said on his return to Turkey. “I had the opportunity to discuss developments in Greek-Turkish relations and çrurkey’s) procedure toward EU accession. The Greeks repeatedly stressed that they will not back down in providing support to Turkey in the process of EU accession,” he said. “The most important issue concerns the Aegean, but we are on agoodpath. Officials from both sides are continuing their work. Later, together, we will discuss the thorny issues,” Erdogan said. Referring to his visit to Western Thrace, he said: “What matters in politics is not to make enemies but to make friends. We are developing our policy in this direction.”

Deputy Foreign Minister Evripidis Stylianidis gave the government’s position on the first visit to Western Thrace by a Turkish leader since 1952. “We broke down a taboo in Thrace. After 52 years we hosted— and inavery pleasant atmosphere — a Turkish prime minister, showing that with self-confidence we look to the future together, that we are not governed by insecurity and past suspicions,” Stylianides told NET state television.
In Komotini, Erdogan visited Turkey’s general consulate, where he met with the Supreme Advisory Council of the Turkish Minority of Western Thrace. He avoided visits to the offices of organizations that have not been recognized by the Greek State, such as the Turkish Youth of Western Thrace and Union of Turkish Teachers of Western Thrace. Greece says that according to the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, the minority is religious in nature and not ethnic. Officials say about half the minority’s members are ethnically Turkish. Addressing members of the minority, Erdogan said, “Difficulties and problems do exist. But don’t forget that these things happen in all parts of the world. Our minorities too have problems.”

Although the Muslim minority was isolated and subject to administrative discrimination in the past, in recent years Greece has worked to assimilate it into the general population. This has been helped by the general improvement in Greek-Turkish relations.

Maar volgende beschrijving van een Turkse PM had je een paar jaar geleden toch echt niet in een Griekse krant kunnen lezen:


Turkey’s prime minister belongs to that country’s group of politicians who have distanced themselves from Ankara’s traditional establishment and are therefore attractive, as they have introduced new parameters into political events fora certain period. Adnan Menderes, who visited Greece in 1952, was also in this category. He signed the London and Zurich accords of 1959-60 on the independence of Cyprus. Shortly afterward he was executed. Then Turgul Ozal, who visited Athens in 1988, was exploited byAnkara’s establishment for severalyears until he became somewhat troublesome in his last years.

Erdogan’s advantage is that in the current global situation, he is a valuable reference point for the West in its search for behavioral models in Muslim states compatible with its own political style. He behaves like a leader who wants to wean his country’s political system off the tutelage of the military. He has clashed with Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, whom he has marginalized politically. He has set up a group of economic advisers and continues to fight against Turkey’s establishment on issues such as education.
