Is the Clutch at the "Internet Storks" complete with five Eggs?

On Saturday the 1st of May the fifth egg was sighted. It appears the clutch at the Vetscau Internet storks is complete. A sixth egg is unlikely. At an average interval of two days the female stork laid the eggs. Due to the brood activities and the deep nest hollow the stork protectors and Internet visitor had a difficult time to ascertain the exact number of eggs.

The storks started to incubate as early as May 1st. The young ones will hatch at the end of this month if the storks are not attacked by brood disturbers. These are immature young storks which attack incubating storks and destroy the clutches.

Since incubation started, one stork warms the eggs constantly. Both partners relieve each other in this duty. One of them guards the clutch at all times which also includes turning over the eggs regularly in order for the embryoes to develop evenly. A stork "with time on his hands" preens him/herself or flies into nearby meadows and fields. Upon returning to the nest - the arrival is always accompanied by a greeting of happy clatter of beaks - storks bring backs materials for the nest often. The nest is constantly refurbished. The eggs have to lie in warmth and protected against moisture.

It will now take thirty-two days until the business of incubation turns into hatching of the young. The young ones will hatch in the order in which the eggs were laid. If you want information about the life of storks or the necessary protective measures, the White Stork Information Centre can help. Many more nature protection themes are covered by the exhibits and presented practically and vividly in the garden.
