RABAT, Morocco (AP) _ The Moroccan government on Friday
welcomed the United States' decision to elevate military
ties with the North African nation, a strategic partner in
the war on terror.
Morocco joins an exclusive group of privileged "non-NATO
allies" that includes Japan, Australia and Israel.
The government spokesman, Nabil Benabdallah, thanked the
United States for its support of Morocco's struggle against
terrorism at home and said it was deeply satisfied by the
Thursday decision to raise Morocco's standing.
"It's a testament to Morocco's ... strategic role in the
region and a sign of consideration for the political,
economic and social reforms undertaken by King Mohammed
VI," the government spokesman said in an interview.
Morocco's king, who took the throne in 1999, won praise
from U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell during a visit to
largely Muslim North African countries in December. Among
the new measures Powell singled out was a wide-ranging
reform aimed at improving rights for women.
Washington's decision will allow Morocco to participate in
certain U.S. military contracts as well as development and
research projects, the official MAP news agency said.
Morocco, which has an active network of Islamic militants,
is one of the United States' most important allies in the
Muslim world in fighting terror.
Suicide bombings in Casablanca, Morocco's largest city,
killed 33 bystanders and a dozen bombers last May. Most of
the suspects charged in the March 11 train bombings that
killed 191 people in Madrid were Moroccans.
The U.S. military has said it would welcome Moroccan
troops in Iraq once that country regains sovereignty _ part
of a desire to boost the number of Muslim troops there.
Morocco has not given a response.

ze steunden ook apartheid in zuidafrika en deoorlog in vietnam en nu de massaslachting in palestine maar ze bouwen wel irak dat kan ik niet ontkennen,zonder bouwverguning is het wel eenbeetje moeilijk.
